My full name is Manuel Jorge Nunes de Sousa, I'm Portuguese, living in Porto city, northern Portugal.

I saw a program on CNN about "Ancestry.com" and decided to take a look at this site. I find it very interesting for people to trace back their origins.

If you happen to have the surname NUNES and think I may be of some help, don't hesitate to send me an e-mail to:

All the information I have is:
my grandfather name was earnest antone nunes
my great grandfather was richard antone nunes and his wife was mary jesus. Is there somewhere I can find out where they were married in portugal. is the last name nunes always nunes de sousa and jesus de jesus. I think that they just shortened their names.
i didn't grow up around them and I would love to know more about my
family and where they came from. I think they left portugal in the 1880 but I don't know where in portugal they came from. Thnak you for any help you can give me.

No, not all Nunes are "Nunes de Sousa" as I am. I have two surnames: "Nunes" comes from my mother side of the family, and "Sousa" from my father's. Similar to the German "von", the Dutch "van" and the Italian "di", my "de" (literally meaning "of" or "from") is used to connect both surnames and is not an individual name by itself.

About your grandparents, Richard Antone Nunes and Mary Jesus, it is not possible to trace their origins to a specific place in Portugal just by their names. Their names have been "Americanized". Their original names would be something like: "Ricardo António Nunes" and "Maria de Jesus".

Many Portuguese went to Hawaii via the continental U.S., namelly California. This could explain their already changed names.

Can you trace their entrance to Hawaii? Can you know where their ship came from?

This information is vital.

manuel

thank you

Antone: António or Antão?

I've been thinking about your grandfather's name, "Antone". It probably doesn't come from the Portuguese name "António" but more likely from "Antão".

I found the ship they they came to Hawaii on.
The ship name was The Priscilla.
Sept 29, 1878 they arrived in Hawaii.
They were from Maderia. His wife Marie de Jesus. How would I go about finding out who their parents are?

I saw your message and wondered if we could
help each other. Our office is working on an
estate matter within Probate Court and we are
seeking the descendants of MANUEL and DRUTE
NUNES, originally from the Azores. They are
believed to have emigrated to the city of
Providence, State of Rhode Island, USA. In
that city they had three children:JOSEPH V.
NUNES,born 1894, THERESA, born 1900 and MARY,
born 1902.

My grandfather is Joseph Anthony Nunes, he was born here in California. His father is Joseph Anthony Nunes (Jose Antonio Nunes) and he lived in Porto too!! - He came the the U.S. in 1918 - We don't know his father's name but we know he had some brothers. Jose was born Sep 4, 1896 in Portugal. He died in 1982 here in CA. Is there any way to find out more? I'd love to know. Thanks
