Hi, I am looking for any information about Marcus Raible, born 1837 in Germany. He married Rosina Zerkil and came to the US sometime after 1868 with their son Gottlieb. Any info on siblings, other children, or immigration would be greatly appreciated. I was told by my father-in-law that the town in Germany where they are from has a population in the hundreds most of whom are Raibles, but I don't know the name of the town. Thanks.

Hi Robin. I am Gottlieb's granddaughter, Helen's daughter, Mary Ann. I did the Raible Cookbook for the reunion in '98. I think Pat Carloss said the family was from Weretenberg or Wittenberg? Vera's Charlie and Jennifer are going to Germany in the near future to look up some family history.
Good luck!

I happen to have that cookbook! My husband Duane is David's son. Dave is one of Thomas' children. It is amazing how many of us there are! Thanks for your help.

Robin, you are in luck. Through the largess of the Omalley clan of the Raible decendents the Raibles were trace back to 1739. List goes as follows. They are all from Bonsdorf Wurttemburg Germany.
Marcus 4-4-1832 son of Martin 11-21-1806 son of Joseph 1-4-1776 son of Joseph 9-5-1739.

I have been tracing both sides of my family. and noticed your message concerning the Raibles. My father's maternal grandfather was John (Johann?) Raible who was born on August 30, 1833 in Truchtelfingen, Kingdom of Wurtemberg, Germany. He immigrated to the U.S. in 1850 and lived in New York, Pennsylvania, Wisconsin and Iowa before settling in the Territory of Arizona (Prescott) in 1864. If this ends up being a productive lead, would you please let me know? Thanks.

Marcus RAIBLE was born 25 May 1832 in Binsdorf, Schwarzwaldkries, Württemberg.

Rosina ZIRKEL was born 29 Dec 1834 in Erlaheim.

They were married 15 Jan 1856 in Binsdorf and had the following children:

Daniel, born 29 Oct 1856 in Binsdorf
Martin, born 2 Jan 1858 in Erlaheim
Johannes Evangelist, born 29 Dec 1860 in Binsdorf
Maximillian, born 26 Feb 1862 in Binsdorf
Genovefa, born 29 Mar 1863 in Binsdorf
Joseph, born 12 Oct 1864 in Binsdorf
Philippine, born 15 Dec 1865 in Binsdorf
Stillborn male, born/died 27 Sep 1866 in Binsdorf
Gottlieb, born 15 Sep 1868 in Binsdorf

There is at least one more daughter, Mary, who was born in Pennsylvania circa 1874. The family lived on Pearl Street in 1880, and Marcus was deceased by that time, so he probably died between 1873 and 1880.

I think I might be related to this family through my KNUPFER roots in Binsdorf. Maximilian, Martin, and Genovieve were all baptismal sponsors for my great-grandfather and his siblings (surname MÜNZER). In fact, some of my relatives are presumably named after them.

If you look at the 1880 census you will see that Marcus was deceased and Rosina and the children lived at 187 Pearl St. in Pittsburgh. The children were Daniel, Martin, Max, Jennie, Josepth, Minnie, Gottlieb and Mary. Here are approx. birth years for the persons Steve Bloomquist did not mention in his reply: Jennie 1863, Minnie 1866, Mary 1874.

I am the great gandaughter of Joseph Raible Sr. born 12 Oct. 1864 at Wurtemburg, Germany and deceased 25 Feb 1938 at Versailles, PA.

Gottlieb is buried at St. Mary's German Cemetery on Grandview Ave. in McKeesport, PA. He died in 1945. Do you have the exact death date for Gottlieb?

Linda

Genovesa is Jennie
Phillipina is Minnie

So they were mentioned, just under their full German names rather than American nicknames.
