The true French family name of the original ancestor from France was ROY. He was known as Roy dit Desjardins, and some of his descendants went by Roy dit Lauzier, others by Roy dit Voisine. Thus many Roy and all the Desjardins, Lausier, and Voisine are descendants of that ROY. This information comes to me through "The French Connection", a website by Bob Chouinard,http://members.mint.net/frenchcx/
My Great great grandfather was Joseph Voisine of Fort Kent, Maine. He was married to Alphonsine (Charron) dit Laferriere. He died in 1873.

Yes, you are correct about the original name being Roy. My uncle has traced my family (I'm a Lausier) back to the 1600's and the story tells about why the name was changed. Very interesting to read. My family has been traced back to Antoine Roy who was the son of Olivier Roy and Catherine Boderge. He married Marie Major in 1688.

No, Voisine is not the French spelling for "king." The French word for king is "roi" (also spelled "roy" back in the 1600s). Voisine is the French word for neighbor. More precisely, Voisine is the French feminine singular for neighbor. The masculine singular would be Voisin. The surname Voisine, however, evolved from the surname Roy (as did Desjardins and Lausier) in the Kamouraska region of Quebec in the 1700s.

The Voisines are descended from the marriage of Jean-Baptiste Roy and Genieve Cote, who were married in 1749. (In some records Jean-Baptiste's surname is recorded as Roy-dit-Desjardins.) He died in 1756 leaving Genevieve a widow with four young children. In 1757 she married Philippe Voisine (although Philippe's father's surname is given as Voisin). Philippe was born in France so it is possible he was a recent arrival to the Quebec colony. He raised the four Roy children as his own, and from this time forward parish registers often record some of the Roy children and their descendants as Roy-dit-Voisine, then eventually as Voisine. "Dit" names were a common French Canadian practice. The word "dit" means "known as.

It should also be noted that Genevieve Cote and Philippe Voisine had children of their own. However, no male descendants are known to have had male descendants. It would appear that all Voisines of French Canadian ancestry are descendents of Genevieve Cote and Jean-Baptiste Cote, and bear the Voisine suname of Genevieve's second husband.

I too am the the great grandson of Joseph Voisine and Alphonsine Laferriere. My grandfather, also named Joseph, was their son. He married Edith Dumont.

Are you descended from Joseph and Alphonsine's daughter Julie? She married Henry Pelletier. So I'm assuming the Pelkey surname is derived from Pelletier.

My research indicates that Joseph Voisine died in 1871, not 1873. Alphonsine was pregnant with my grandfather (born in November 1871) when her husband died. There was only the one older daughter, Julie. Alphonsine later married Louis Michaud and had several children with him.

I've never been able to find the date or location of Joseph and Alphonsine's marriage. I would appreciate any information you have regarding them. I do know that Joseph was the son of Joseph Voisine and Julie Emond. He may have been their only child or only surviving child - I've never found any siblings. And it is possible that one of both of his parents died young, because he was raised by an uncle and aunt: Cyrille Roy who was married to Zoe Emond (Cyrille was Joseph's brother and Zoe was Julie Emond's sister).

Also of interest is that not only was Julie Voisine named after her grandmother Julie Emond, but Julie Emond's mother was Julie Ouellette.
