I am looking for info on Col. Richard Townley who was married to Elizabeth Smith. Elizabeth's first husband was Philip Carteret. They were possibly in the area of present-day New Jersey. Their daughter was Mary Catharine Townley who married William Bentley. Time period is the 1600's. Information on any of these people is appreciated.

Elizabeth Smith also married William Lawrence. She was the daughter of Richard Smith, patentee of Smithtown, Long Island, New York, and Sarah Folger. I'm looking for ancestry of Richard Townley.

John, I am researched the Townley family for several years. A very helpful book is "First Settlers of Passaic Valley" by John Littel. It gives a great deal of information on Richard and many, many others. Let me know how you do. I have traced my family back to Richard and then back to England and Townley Hall. My email address is bachnancy@hotmail.com Good luck. Nancy Bach

The NJ Hist Soc has a family tree of the Townleys which was prepared in England in the 1700's. It goes back to the 1400's. If you can get to Newark, NJ the NJHS library is open Tues-Fri 12PM-5PM free. Large files on the Townleys. Good luck. Dick

John, have you found the ancestry of Richard Townley yet? If not, let me know. There is a very good ancestor chart that goes back to the origin of the name and connects with the Lacy family who were at the signing of the Magna Charta. I haven't researched the family for several years but if you want I can dig out the info on the Townley family and all related lines - Sherburne, Gifford, Whalley, etc. (excuse me if I confuse the issue, this is from memory but the offer is good). Good luck. Esther

Esther, thanks for your response. I found a
great deal of material on both Richard's line
and the early roots of the Townley family,
including the 1888 chart of Alden Hill. I'm
related to Richard's wife Elizabeth Smith,
and to the Townleys through a branch that
settled in what now is Northern Ireland, Co.
Down.

The early lines get quite complex, especially
where the lineages pass from mother to son.
I do have Geoffrey Whalley married to Alice
de Lacy, sister of John, the Magna Carta
baron. I also have the lines connecting on
back in time to William the Conqueror and
Adam and Eve, if you have any interest.

Please contact me at abeus@bellatlantic.net
if you would like to compare notes. Thanks
again for your help and suggestions.

Regards, John.

John,

I would really be interested in the Townley roots that go back to Adam and Eve!! This is something I've got to see! Name your price, friend.

You can reach me at abeus@bellatlantic.net
Send me your e-mail address so we can
communicate directly. I'll be happy to send
details. Let me know how far back you go on
the Townleys and where you first tie in. If you
are computerized, I can generate a GEDCOM,
otherwise I'll make a more limited print out.
