Dennis (Dionysuis) Sullivan was born 1800 in Cork County, Ireland. His wife, Julia Ann Sullivan. was born 1805.
Dennis and Julia sailed to the U.S. in 1829 from Cork County, Ireland. Dennis, a squire, sold his land in County Cork, and purchased timber land in Rhode Island, where they settled first with their 3 month old son Daniel. Dennis and Julia had the following children: Daniel Sullivan born 1928 in Cork County Ireland, Dennis Sullivan Jr. born 1831 in Rhode Island, Catherine Sullivan born 1833 in Massachusetts, Michael Sullivan born 1838 in Michigan, Hamorra Sullivan born 1942 in Iowa, Margaret Sullivan born 1844 in Iowa, Eugene Sullivan born 1846 in Iowa, Ellen Sullivan born 1848 in Iowa. They acquired land and settled in Sherrill, Dubuque County, Iowa, Jefferson Township around 1834. Dennis Sullivan Sr. died 20 August 1887 in Sherrill, IA and Julia Ann Sullivan died 18 May 1883 in Sherrill, IA. They were buried at St. Peter &Paul Cemetery in Sherrill, Dubuque Co, IA. Along with their children, Margaret & Eugene, and grandchildren, Mary C, John P & Ellen Sullivan.
Daniel D. Sullivan (Dennis -1) married Julia Roche in 1861. Julia R. was born 1843 in Elkader, IA. Her parents were Michael and Brigitte Roche of Dubuque County, Iowa. Daniel and Julia had the following children: Edward Sullivan b. 1862 in Elkader IA, William Sullivan b. 1866 in Elkader, IA, Ellen Sullivan b. 1868 in Elkader, IA, d. 1870 in Sherrill, IA, Mary Catherine Sullivan b. 1868 in Elkader, IA, d. 1868 in Sherrill, IA, John Patrick Sullivan b. 1869 in Elkader, IA, d. 1869 in Sherrill, IA, Daniel Stephen Sullivan b. 1869 in Sherrill IA, Francis (Frank) Sullivan b. 1871 in Sherrill IA, John Thomas Sullivan b. 1873 in Sherrill IA, Clement Joseph Sullivan b. 1874 in Sherrill IA, James Andrew Sullivan b. 1877 in Sherrill IA, Julia Agnes Sullivan b. 1878 in Sherrill IA, Robert Sullivan b. 1880 in Sherrill IA, Charles W. Sullivan b. 1885 in Lake County SD, Mark Joseph Sullivan b. 1886 in Lake County SD, Walter C. b. 1887 in Lake County SD. Many of their children settled near Balltown, Dubuque Co, Iowa. Daniel & Julia originally homesteaded in Sherrill, Iowa with Daniel’s parents, Dennis & Julia Sullivan. In 1880, Daniel (52) and Julia (48) left, with their surviving 9 children, for Lake County, SD, where their son, Edward & his new wife, Adelaide Herkes, had homesteaded. Daniel and Julia are buried at St. Williams Cemetery, Ramona, Lake Co, SD along with several children and grandchildren.
Dennis Sullivan Jr. (Dennis -1) married Catherine McAloon b. 1832. They settled in Madison, Lake County, South Dakota around 1880 along with his brother Daniel’s Family . Dennis Jr. and Catherine had the following children: Dennis William b. 1856; Catherine Sullivan b. 1858; Mary A. Sullivan b. 1860; Marianne Sullivan b. 1862; Ellen Sullivan b. 1864; Alice Sullivan b. 1865; Eliza J. Sullivan b. 1869. Dennis Jr. married Alice Roche.
Dennis William Sullivan III (Dennis -1, Dennis Jr. -2) married Mary Agnes Kessler, Daughter of Jacob Kessler and Ellen McDonald. They settled in Lake County, SD. Dennis III and Mary had the following children: Jacob E; William F; James L; Joseph G Sullivan b. 1887; Clarence Sullivan b. 1889; Ellen F Sullivan-Booth b. 1891; Verna E Sullivan-Koscki b. 1893; Vera A Sullivan-Robinson b. 1893; Alice Sullivan b. 1893; Stella C Sullivan-Carter b. 1897; Edna J Sullivan-Mertens b. 1900.
Edward Sullivan (Dennis -1, Daniel -2) married Adelaide Herkes. They settled in Badus Township, Lake County, SD. They had the following children: Gladys Sullivan b. 1895, Alphonse Sullivan b. 1897, Julius Sullivan b. 1898, Lucille Sullivan b. 1900, John Sullivan b. 1902, Eva Sullivan b. 1906, Monica Sullivan b. 1908, Eugene Sullivan b. 1910.

Daniel Sullivan & Julia Roche first settled in Lake County, SD by purchasing a homestead, the SW 1/4 section 20, Township 108, Range 53, in Badus Township on May 21, 1880, from Martin M. Olsen. Daniel & Julia were among the original families of the area & helped build the new St. Williams Catholic Church in Ramona in 1899. Their son, Edward and Adelaide, too were part of the original families to help build the church. Next they purchased the SE 1/4 Section 19, Township 108, Range 53, from the Iowa & Dakota Land Company on Oct. 1, 1891. On Dec. 21, 1893, their son, Edward, purchased the 1/4 Section 19, Township 108, N Range 53 containing 160 acres from his parents, Daniel Sullivan & Julia Roche.
