I am at a brickwall right now on only one branch of the family tree...

I'm hoping that someone can provide me with traction regarding the relatives of Tekla Lehtimäki of Soukainen, Laitila. Her 1907 passenger record (attached) appears to show that her birthplace is Soukainen and Hiski indicates that this village is in the parish of Laitila. She married Nils Henrik Henriksson (Nels Henry Hendrickson) of Hirvijärvi, Övertorneå, Norrbotten, Sweden in Negaunee, Michigan.

The US census records suggest that she was born in 1887 or 1888. I cannot find any record of her on the Institute of Migration and her birthdate is too recent for Hiski. Of course there are other Lehtimäkis heading to the Negaunee/Ishpeming area. I can only find one Tekla in the Institute of Migration system but the 1900 passport date does not match her immigration date of 1907.

If anyone can help me out regarding Tekla's siblings and/or parents, I would be very grateful. If anyone has an interest in her US descendants, let me know.

Karen at Finlander Forum is probably correct. Tekla was from the Siikainen parish.

I'd appreciate any help in learning the name of her parents in Siikainen.

In the 1920 and 1930 census, Nels states that he was born in Finland. He does not seem to remember when he emigrated.
In 1930 he states he came in 1890 and she in 1901.
In 1920 they both say a date of 1912.

Tekla, 22 Finland Landlady in a boarding house. No emigrant date is filled in.
She has 4 boarders in her home.
I think it is on Lombard St. ?? by Bluff and Tobin St. are the other two on the page before

I should have been more clear. I have everything I need on this side of the Atlantic but I need some help in Finland for the latter half of the 19th century. The Hiski system should be sufficient for me to use if I can figure out the family members from 1850 to the immigration period. That system only goes up to 1850 so I have about a 50 year gap.

I suspect that several of my immigrant ancestors returned to Finland from the UP during the bad economic times prior to the 1910 census.

Hi,

I don't know if this is obvious but just in case

a) you can contact the parish and ask for the info you want (parents, siblings, etc)
b) you can go to a place where you can access microfilms to find out the same.
c) you can hire a researcher in Finland (with access to the microfilms and or parish records)
d) you can try to find some to volunteer to do the research in Finland

(a) is best because it might be that the "moved-out" list is the easiest way to find Tekla and 1907 might not yet be microfilmed/available due to privacy.

Please note that getting to the "Hiski-period" doesn't mean that you should use that as your only source. If you want to do Finnish research, you will have to be looking at the microfilms at some stage. Or wait until someone has had time&motivation to digitize the records to www.digiarkisto.org

BTW, there is to "Turku-Pori". Turun ja Porin lääni - a now historical entity - is probably meant.

Lehtimäki is not a very unusual name so it might be that the shop keepers with that name currently in Siikainen are of no relation. But if you want to send them a letter just in case the address is on page http://www.tarmo.net/index.php?page=shops&action=show&am...

I just came across your web site regarding Tekla Lehtimaki. Was especially interested to see my family (Kallioinen) so well documented. I can tell you that Juho A. (John) Kallioinen was my grandfather. He had a sister named Alexandra, not Alexander. I have spoken to my Mother who will look into her records to see if there is any link from Alexandra to Tekla. Perhaps you have already broken the code since your post was in 2007! But will try to see what my family can come up with!

Hello! I did some searching, and, I did find a Tekla Hildegard born 2 August 1889 to : Salomon Lähteenmäki and Maria Josefina in Merikarvia, which is in the Siikainen area. Is it possible that the name Lehtimäki was used here instead of Lähteenmäki? Also, did Tekla have some brothers? There are four of them listed as being born before Tekla, so, do you think this may be "your" Tekla?
