KENYONs in Maine, 1700-1805?

Friends, I am searching for birth date and parents of my GGG grandfather, Thompson E. KENYON, b. ca1804, if dates on his gravestone in EatonCo MI in 1849 are correct.

I know that sometime by 1834, he had married Mary Ann COWAN, in Scipio, CayugaCo NY, and that he had purchased Land Patents in 1837 and 1842 in EatonCo MI. I have found their information in EatonCo, including Mary Ann's and his deaths there, and the names of the Guardians named for their two children in their teens.

There seems to be no connection to the Rhode Island KENYONS yet, after 30 years' search. I have seen that Buddington? KENYON lived in Maine, but a search of the Maine Counties' Message Boards did not show anyone looking for that name :-(

I would be grateful for your advice. I am running out of time and options! Thanks, Patricia

I’m not related to any member of this family.

1850, 1860 & 1870 census records do not show family relationships, marital status or parental birthplaces.

Step children are not enumerated as “step” children
Adopted children are not enumerated as “adopted”
Grand children are not enumerated as “grand children”
Orphaned children were not enumerated as "orphan"
Immigration date is not recorded

1850 is the 1st census that shows all family members with their birthplaces

NOTE -
1837 Michigan was admitted to the Union.

Michigan did not require “by law” birth, marriage & death registrations until 1867.

Looks like Thompson had 4 children in 1840.

Death records are recorded in the county where the person died; not the county of residence.

familysearch.org has no marriage record for Thompson.

Need 1st names + DOB's for Thompson's children

Hi Patricia,

I can offer tidbits of information from the HeritageQuest census records on-line (through library).

In 1790 census, there was a Benjamin KENYON living in Provincetown, MA (Barnstable Co.). Looks like a wife and 3 kids.
And, there were 3 KENYON couples in Plainfield, NH, Alexander, Joseph, and Joseph, Jr.
And, there were 9 KENYON couples, mostly in Voluntown, CT (Windham Co.).
And, there were 23 KENYON couples in NY State - in many different towns and counties.
And, there were 60 KENYON couples in RI - almost all in Washington Co.

In 1800 census, it was about the same; however the numbers dropped in RI.
And, there were 2 .. Thomas KENYON's in NY State, in different towns.
And there was one Thomas in RI.

In 1810 census, it was about the same for New England, but a few more in southern states.
There were a few more couples in NY State, including possibly .4. Thomas KENYON's.
In RI there were 3 Thomas KENYON's, including a .. Capt. Thomas KENYON.

In 1820 census there were a total of 92 KENYON's, with a few more in other states, like Indiana, Ohio, and PA. (one in VT) A few more in southern states.

The next census I can check this way is the 1860, and there were many more at this time, over 1000, and in many different states.
There were 6 Thomas KENYON's in 6, different states, including

KENYON, THOMAS E (1860 U.S. Census)
MICHIGAN , ALLEGAN, LEIGHTON
Age: 41, Male, Race: WHITE, Born: CT
Series: M653 Roll: 535 Page: 487

That Thomas had a wife, Mary, and they had a 10-yr-old girl with them with a different name. Note ..CT.. and a birthyear closer to 1820.

The 1820 census has 7 people listed in different towns in CT, including an Edward.

In 1870, that Thomas and Mary KENYON are still in Michigan, but this time with 2, young sons. The handwriting is difficult, but it looks like Simien and Abrue.

KENYON, THOMAS (1870 U.S. Census)
MICHIGAN , ALLEGAN, LEIGHTON
Age: 50, Male, Race: WHITE, Born: CT
Series: M593 Roll: 660 Page: 232

That's all for the moment.

Hi again,

If you go to the home-page www.rootsweb.com and go down to the WorldConnect Project, and do a search, you will find .many. people searching the KENYON name. And, if you search for Thompson or Thomas, there are still many people who have posted information there.

One hint for that: Once you do the initial search, scroll down to the bottom of the page and put in the .details. you know - to get better results. Sometimes you need to limit your details.

One other hint .. You can now do an "Archives Search" there - to find if the name you are researching shows up on ..any.. List.

Another hint .. Every once in a while you can find tidbits of information by doing a Google search for the name you are researching - in quotation marks.

Hi Betty, Thank you for your search. So you found only Thomas KENYONs, and none named Thompson E. KENYON? Perhaps there is a Thompson among those Thomases, so I will check them all out!!

Thompson E. & wife Mary Ann came from NY to EatonCo MI in abt 1837, and I have ALL of their references in MI - just cannot find anything before their marriage in CayugaCo NY in abt 1830-1833, so no parents or birth date for Thompson E. KENYON...

Thanks so much. This has been a loooong search for a GGG grandfather! Patricia

Hi Patricia,

You can't just search for an .exact. name on census records. It depends on the Census-taker what is written down. What he or she .hears. and what the person . says. And, sometimes it's the wife, or adult child, talking to the census-taker. So they might not say the exact name - just the name which their relative goes by !

So you should consider .all. possibilities.

Betty
