Looking for information on Robinson Shackelford. B abt 1797. Married to Sarah (?) Don't know where he started but was in Edmonson Co. Ky. in 1817 when his daughter Harriett was born. Assume he died in Kentucky. I have been told he joined the Shakers for a short time but have no proof. Thanks for any info.

In the book GONE TO THE WORLD by Marc Rhorer, listing members of the Shakers at Pleasant Hill, in Mercer County, KY, I find one Shackleford, as follows.

Amanda Shackleford born 10/1/1847 in Edmonson County, KY...Came to Pleasant Hill Shaker village on 1/30/1863,,,,nothing further is listed....interesting that she is from Edmonson County, so may be a connection. It is possible Robinson was there as well but may have been there a short time or was a Winter Shaker...coming in the late fall and leaving early spring.

There are Shaker journals on microfilm if you are near libraries in Kentucky, such as the Filson Historical Society in Louisville, KY or Harrodsburg, KY HIstorical Society....also there are journals on microfilm at Western KY University in Bowling Green, KY...mainly on South Union Shaker Village, but there is some entries for Pleasant Hill as well.

Good luck.

Robinson Shackleford, son of William Shackleford and Elizabeth Moore, born 28 August 1797, died 4 Aug. 1851. Married Sarah Camp, daughter of Hardin Camp and Sarah Hawkins, 10 July 1815, Warren Co., KY. Sarah born 26 Jan, 1794, Mercer Co., KY, died 9 Nov. 1855. Much of the above is from the papers of the late T. K. Jones, publisher of Shackelford Clan Magazine, kept at the TN State Library and Archives. Since Jones collected family group sheets from many different people, I can't vouch for the accuracy of all of the above.

These are the Shaker records for a Robinson Shackleford:

From the History of the South Union Shaker Colony, transcribed by Harvey L. Eades in 1870 from original journals and diaries pertaining to South Union:

Wed., Sept. 25, 1816, p. 240
Backwards they go. - Robinson Shackelford & Tarrence Dial leave Black Lick to day for Mississippi.

Mon., Nov. 11, 1816, p. 243
Return - (And I presume re-admitted H.L.E.) [Note: H.L.E. is the compiler of the records. sbt]
Robinson Shackelford & old Tarrance Dial, his daughter Polly & family
came back.

Robinson Shackelford does not appear on any of the Shaker membership or death lists.

William Shackleford, his father, is believed to have been the son of my third great-grandfather Roger Shackleford, who entered the South Union community with his second wife Sally Laird and five children in 1813. Both Roger and Sally died there.

When I looked at the transcribed journals at South Union, I did not see Amanda Shackleford. However, I did see these additional Shacklefords below. Most of them are difficult to precisely identify:

Roger Shackleford, journal entries in 1813, 1816, 1820, 1822

Sally Laird Shackleford, journal entries 1813, 1816, 1820

Their son Zechariah - 1813, 1817

Their son Montgomery - 1813, 1822

Betsy Shackleford - 1816

Drucilla Shackleford - 1818 [I believe that Drucilla was the daughter of Roger and Sally and therefore the half-sister of my gg grandmother but cannot prove it conclusively.]

Viney Shackleford - 1827, 1833

N. or H. Shackleford - 1852

His son Harrison - 1852

His son Carter - 1852, 1861, 1862

Lucy Shackleford - 1854, 1856, 1862, 1863, 1864, 1865, 1867, 1868, 1869, 1870, 1872, 1873, 1874

Martha J. "Mattie" Shackleford - 1854, 1857, 1862, 1863, 1870.
Mattie was Lucy's sister. She left South Unon on Nov. 15, 1870. On Dec. 7, 1870, the 32-year-old Lucy married a 66-year-old widower, Samuel Fisher, in Sumner County, TN. On May, 3, 1871, Mattie was granted a divorce and the restoration of her maiden name after a lurid trial. I have been unable to find any record of her after that.

Roger Shackleford, Jr., - 1816

William Shackleford - 1817

Hudson Shackleford - 1822, 1827, 1835

Mary Shackleford - 1854, 1855, 1858, 1860, 1861

Margaret E. "Maggie" Shackleford - 1885, 1886, 1889, 1890

Some of these Shacklefords appear in membership and death lists with some discrepancies in dates. Some of them appear to have had family in Logan County, KY.
