I am looking for Moses ancestors who may have Syrian blood. My Grandfather, Emmett Charles Moses (see below), is a mystery to us. It is possible that he may have been in Ohio before he came to Tennessee. Emmett’s father may have come from Syria in the late 1800’s. If you have any information, I would be most grateful, as we have not been able to find any information.

Descendants of Emmett Charles Moses

1. EMMETT CHARLES MOSES was born 1881 in Ohio, and died August 08, 1927 in Chattanooga, Hamilton County, Tennessee. He married ADA BELL BURKETT 1913, daughter of JACK BURKETT and SARAH BURNETT. She was born January 31, 1889, and died June 13, 1979 in Chattanooga, Hamilton County, Tennessee.

Child of EMMETT MOSES and ADA BURKETT is:

i. ROY LEE MOSES, b. August 08, 1917, Chattanooga, Hamilton County, Tennessee; d. January 27, 1991, Chattanooga, Hamilton County, Tennessee; m. MARY EMMA PRUETT, February 11, 1945, Chattanooga, TN; b. December 05, 1921, Horton, Blount County, Alabama.

Hello brother. I was going to email you this web site. looks like you already have a good handle. Did you look at the message about a Lizzie ( Elizabeth ) Burkett who lived in the Hixon area of Chattanooga. This one could fit in well with the Burkett clan of north Chattanooga and golf. I think the golf course is in the hixon area. could be a lead.

My name is Norma Moses from Beaumont, Texas. I am doing a research of my husband's family. I have traced it back to New York and Louisiana. I am hoping you are a long lost relative. My husband name is Russell Moses. He is related to David Moses born abt 1847 in Syrian Arab Republic. He had brothers named William born abt 1880, David or Dave born abt 1896 in Syrian Arab Republic, and George F Moses Sr born abt 1895 in Syrian Arab Republic, sisters Tennesce Moses born abt 1890,Ola Mae Moses abt 1891 and Faye Moses abt 1919. Information shows he must have been married to Mary L Moses (no maiden name) born abt 1858 and Alma 1909. His mother and father were from Syrian Arab Republic. They must have come by ship to U. S.to N.Y. They lived in New York and Natchitoches,Merriville,Lousiana and David jr. nationalization papers shows 1913. My father in law is George f Moses Jr. He was born in New Orleans in 1921. He say the family never new his Grandfather David Moses. He will be 87 years old this coming yr in Feb. I am trying to find answers for him. If they were Syian, or Hebrew or Jewish. Where and how he immigrated to the U. S.? Who was his parents and Where did he live in Syria? I hope you can lead me in another direction to find relatives of David Moses i have run out of information.

Just to make it easier, in Arabic Moses is "Mousa".I don't know where the family originates from. But i do know that it is a pretty big one (includes Muslims&Christians). But most of those who migrated to the U.S at that time -in case he was from Syria- were from Homs, Syria. You can narrow down your research to the villages surrounding Homs. Try to contact the Syrian Embassy in D.C. they might be able give you information about how to research your relative in the the Syrian archives.

I think Samaha family is originally Lebanese. But they maintain a presence in Syria.
