Will have occasion to be in Wales next month and would like while there to see if I can find anything on Jehu Stokely and his family. Would appreciate any information anyone might have on any family ties Jehu might have in Wales, along with birthdates, locations, that might aid my search. Jehu, as you all probably know, is supposed to be the first of our line to have landed in the colonies, married in Charleston, then migrated to East Tennessee, where hundreds of his descendants lived and died.

i too am a descendent of Jehu stokely, and have always been perplexed by conflicting stories of his lineage. some say he was from wales, others say western england. and then there is the story my father used to tell me that he was an admiral in the british navy (although i've never seen that substantiated) and now I read he was only a sailor. I suppose anyhow he may have told his grandchildren tall tales and exagerated his experiences... anyways for you that were in wales researching Jehu stokely i would love to to share infomation if you have time.

Hi.
I'm Chuck Stokely and live in Marietta, GA. I too am a direct descendant of Jehu Stokely. You said you were going to Wales to try to find out about the Stokely family there. By any chance did you go to Llanidloes, which I believe is in Montgomeryshire, to see the site of the "Stokely castle" which used to be there but no longer exists? I have a photograph of the ruins of the castle that was taken by a cousin of mine (also a Stokely) in the 1940s or 50s. He told me that he saw many graves of Stokelys near the castle.

Chuck:
I just came across your query about my trip to Wales and Jehu Stokely. As it turned out, my wife was the only one who made the trip and she didn't have time to do much genealogy while in England. The Stokely Castle sounds interesting and I may find my way there eventually. I'm still dabbling in trying to confirm the reported presence of Jehu Stokely aboard John Paul Jones' Bon Homme Richard when it battled the British vessel Serapis. No luck yet. I have a well-researched book by a Professor Sheldon Cohen at Loyola in Chicago entitled "Yankee Prisoners in British Gaols," which relates how at least 43 Yankee prisoners who had been held at the British prisons at Forton and Mill in the UK did in fact wind up with Jones aboard the Richard. He even named a few of them, but Stokely wasn't among those named. Another, much older book about JPJ lists the crew of the Richard but Stokely doesn't appear there either. Other sources say that particular list is not a complete one. Interestingly, Cohen tells in his book of one man, who he named, who claimed to have been released from one of the British gaols (jails) and then to have served with Jones at the battle with the Serapis. Turns out the man's story was a fabrication. There are many, many accounts of life in the British jails, including lots of diaries by the Yankees held there, and there are lists of the prisoners who were exchanged. Finding these lists is a difficult proposition. Benjamin Franklin was intimately involved in the exchanges so one would think his papers would be a good place to look. The only account we have of Jehu's being held prisoner and then being exchanged and being aboard JPJ's Richard apparently come from Jehu himself. At least I assume this is where the story originated. My great grandfather Stokely was the one quoted in "Over The Misty Blue Hills" as having told this story of Jehu in 1937 to Lady Ruth Odell, the author of "Misty." I'm not going to let the story go, even though it may be a fabrication, and will continue to try and find Jehu's name on those prisoner lists. Let me know if you have anything more on Jehu's ancestry.

With warm regards,

Robert Lee
