Surnames: HAMILTON, SVENSSON, CARLSSON
Looking for this Swedish relative who came from Sweden and lived in Nebraska. He also has a son by the same name, although the father's original surname was Svensson. At some point, one of them changed their last name to Hamilton (probably the son, but not sure), and this is the name that has continued down through the family line.

There is a grave in Lincoln, NE for Caroline S. Hamilton on which the birth and death dates match up as being the wife of the elder Carl Johan. She must have Americanized her last name, as in Sweden she was known as Stina Catharina Samuelsdotter (Stina is probably short for Christina or Kristina, or something similar).

Does anyone have any information on these people or their family?

Are you mainly interested in the Nebraska period of their lives? I may be able to help with their lives in Sweden if you know the parish where they lived. I have subscriptions which have Swedish records.

I would definitely like any information I can get, especially the parts that pertain to Sweden.

Both of my mom's parents' lines trace back to Sweden, but I'll only give you her mother's side since they are the ones that ended up in Nebraska. The furthest back I can go is to Carl Johan (Oscar?) Svensson. b. 28 April 1821 in Sweden (possibly Svinhult Parish), died 14 July 1899 in Nebraska (Lincoln, I believe). In 1850 he married Stina Catharina Samuelsdotter, however I'm not 100% positive that the name is completely correct. "Stina" is likely a nickname for Christina. There is a grave for a "Caroline S. Hamilton" in Lincoln, NE on which the dates match up with Stina's birth and death dates and they lived in Lincoln. They had a son, Carl (Johan?) Oscar Hamilton, b. 21 Dec 1852 in Svinhult Parish, Ostergotland, Ian, Sweden. He died around 1946 in the U.S. One of these two Carls at some point changed their last name from Carlsson to Hamilton. The two stories that have passed down through our family are 1)he changed his name to sound more American; and 2)there were so many Carl Carlssons working for the railroad at the time that there was often confusion with paychecks, so he changed it to stop that problem. Nobody knows for sure. I question whether there may be some error in the names of the father and son since they are so similar (perhaps one's middle name is Johan and the other is Oscar?) The son married Hulda Amanda Swenson, who was born in Sweden in 1861 and immigrated to the US (probably NE) in 1880. I'm guessing she and Carl were married when they immigrated, but I don't know for sure. I do know that their son Edwin was born in NE around 1886, but the following siblings were born in Iowa. The 1925 Census has them living in Council Bluffs, IA so that area is probably where they went. One of the family trees I looked at whose information appeared to be quite accurate has Carl and Stina in the Gothenburg, Sweden Passenger Lists, 1869-1951. What confuses me most is that if Carl and Stina came from Sweden and died in the U.S., why was their son born in Sweden (and also died in the U.S.). It makes me wonder if there is some confusion here. However, on Mom's other side of the family, her great gandparents immigrated to the U.S. from Sweden but had their daughter (my mom's grandmother) while back in Sweden visiting family. So perhaps something like this occurred.

Thank you so much for taking time to read all this and for sharing any information you might have. Thank you, thank you!

By the way, the Swedish word for county is Län with an l, not Iän with an i.

They married in 1850, according to the household examination record at the time they left Sweden.
