I am looking for some hints (suggestions) on getting information for the parents of my great grandfather and great grandmother. They lived in Bangor, Wales and came to the U.S. on a boat in 1890.

Gr. Grandfather - David Owen Owens - 1852 - 1919
Gr. Grandmother - Ellen Williams - 1854 - 1918

They moved to Bangor, Pennsylvania, USA

When they came to America they had one son 10 years old: Evan Owens

My Grandfather - Owen Owens had his third birthday on the boat coming to America.

How/where do I go about getting info on ancestors in Wales?

Thanks for any help!
Leslie

Hi Leslie

This is a possibility as a starter - This family is from the 1881 British Census.....

Ellen OWEN Wife M Female 26 Llandegai, Caernarvon, Wales Quarrymans Wife

The next step would be to find the marriage certificate for David and Ellen. I've looked on the Free BMD Site (which is incomplete) but can't see a match at the moment.

The Site is http://www.freebmd.rootsweb.com/

The only way to find the marriage is therefore to search the British GRO Indexes for the marriage which involves searching for an entry for David Owen Owens from say 1877 backwards and then finding a corresponding reference for an Ellen Williams - loads of Ellen Williams listed so start with David. Don't forget to look under both Owen and Owens - these were interchangeable depending who was doing the registering.

If you can get the marriage certificate this will give the father's name for both parties and will make the search for their births easier.

For general genealogical information on Caernarvonshire I suggest you look at the GENUKI site...............
http://www.genuki.org.uk/big/wal/CAE/

This site also lists the appropriate Registry Offices under Civil Registration so if you have no luck with the indexes it may be worth writing to the appropriate office to see if they can search for the marriage in their records. You could also try for David Owen Owens birth.

A word of caution - often welsh forenames were reversed - I spent ages looking for my Grandfather and Great Grandfather - their names George William and George Lewis Owen had been reversed and were indexed under William George and Lewis George respectively.

Happy Hunting

Reply to Tony Owens:
Please forgive me for being so late in just saying "thank
you". I'm pretty new to this - but I wanted to make sure I
thanked you for your reply. This information is very much a
good start for me. I am also interested in the history of
the area - particularly what working conditions etc. were at
the time my great grandfather worked in the slate mines.
Just reading all the available information will keep me busy
for quite some time. Thank you so much, again!

Hi Leslie,

David Owen Owens and Ellen Williams Owens are my great great grandparents. I am descended through their daughter Mary Owens Pensyl.

I recently obtained their obituary notices from the Bangor Daily News files at the Bangor Public Library, Bangor, PA.

David Owens' 1919 obituary mentioned a surviving sister, Mrs. Hannah Davis, of Poultney, VT. Do you have any information on her?

Ellen Owens 1918 obituary mentioned three surviving brothers and a sister in Wales. Do you have any information on them? Also, do you know the parents of Ellen Williams Owens?

Any help would be greatly appreciated.
