Yes Krain is Slovenia.

BUKOWATZ variant in Slovenian may be BUKOVAC, sounds like bookohvats... root is bukva = beech tree name means some one from beech forest.

Vimol may be Vimolj Vimolj pri Predgradu located in near Kocevej (once a German area called Gottschee)

The Bukowatz surname is most likely Bukovec. Bukovac sounds more Croatian to me. However, there are at least two Vimolj in Slovenia, one near Ljubljana the other near Stari Trg ob Kolpi. There is no Bukovec/Bukovac in any Vimolj today according to the telephone directory. However, there are four Bukovec near Kocevje, one in the Stari Trg ob Kolpi area. There are also two Bukovac in the Kocevje area. There are Bukovec in various parts of Slovenia, and Bukovac in the Ljubljana area as well.

Since the spelling you have (Bukowatz) is German, this may also suggest the Vimolj in the Gottschee area. Please see http://www.pipeline.com/~jbglad/Gottschee-list.html for where Vimolj is located.

There is really nothing new in what you found. It just confirms the area we already told you about, in today's Republic of Slovenia.

Krain (Carniola) was a crownland (Kronland) of the Austrian Empire. When the Austrian Empire got dismantled after WW 1, Carniola formed the core part of Slovenia which started out as a republic of the new, soon to be named, Yugoslavia. Today, after the disintegration of Yugoslavia, Slovenia is an independent country.

I am trying to find what kronlaende is. My ancestors are Nicholas Pupich - and am trying to find his origins, as we are visiting Croatia in April 2013

it´s meant Kronland/Kronländer(Kronlaender) > crownland/crownlands.
you have to look which Kronland of austria-Hungary was meant.
in any case it will be a now south-slavic country (lastname Pupic).
as you will visit Croatia it will have been simple Kronland Kroatien. ;-) or not? you need a placename.....
