Hi. my grandmother once said that her mother ALICE YATES was a Native American (or had much Native American blood). It depends on who in my family you ask. The one thing I do know is that she told my mother that she had more "Indian blood in her than my grandfather." And thats alot! We assume Cherokee because of the area in North Carolina where my granny was from.

I, too, am interested in any Yates who may have signed the Dancing Rabbit Creek Treaty in Mississippi. Alan Yates was allowed to remain on land among the Indians when the Treaty was signed. What is his relationship to the Choctaw Indians? Ruth Long Menhel from Mississippi

1. John Yates
Born: 1699 Bedford County, Virginia
Married: ??
Died: 22 Jun 1779 in Cherokee Nation (Now North Carolina). Family records say that John Yates parents came from England.

2. Thomas Yates (son of John Yates)
Born: 21 Mar 1762 in Bedford County, Virginia
Married: Rebecca Ragsdale 22 Dec 1776 in VA.
Died: 15 Mar 1834 Cross Plains, TN

3. Thomas Yates Jr. (Grandson of John Yates)
Born: 21 Mar 1798 in Stone River, TN
Married: Aris Griffen 1816 in TN.
Died: 12 Dec 1855 in Lamar County, TX.
Aris Griffen was 1/4 Cherokee. Her mother (Peggy Madole) was 1/2 Cherokee).

Family historians tell me that John Yates his wife were Christian Missionaries in the Cherokee Nation at the time of his death. Both his son grandson married Cherokee women. But I have no proof of this. I am trying to validate these historian's stories.

That is all that I have. I'm trying to trace John Yates back to England if possible.

John Yates descendents?

Sorry I have no Mattie B. Yates in my data base of Yates names. Also, I have no known links to any in Missouri. SORRY! I've printed out your message, if I come across anything that might be a connection, I'll let you know! Happy hunting! Beth

I found your info on John Yates and the Cherokee Nation very interesting. I am searching the Yates' line and have also found marriages to Cherokee and Creek women.I I am wondering if we may somehow connect. I have a John Yates b. c. 1710 married to Sarah , children- William b. c 1730 in VA d. c. 1808 in VA m.Mary Tapp (1732-1812) also VA. Their son, William (c. 1755-1836)VA-GA m. Mary Wimberly (1758-1850) We think he was in Rev War. Their son Burrell (1771-1839)m Sarah Cothern (half-Cherokee). The line had now come from VA through GA (land lottery) and into FL where Burrell died. Burrell's brother James, also married a Cherokee, Agnes 'Aggie' Rowland. Would love to hear from you if you think I may be a link to your Yates.....Thanks Kay

I have little to no info on my John Yates. But several of the things in your posting......My John Yates married a Cullen from Florida so the Yates must have been in Florida at one time. They possibly originated from Mississippi. John Yates had at least one son Ruben Eziekiel and at least one daughter--her name ?? Matilda, Maude; She ended up in the Dallas, Texas area. Does any of this link to any of your info? Time frame was mid to late 1800's, for their birhts. Thank you Arlene
