"The Encyclopedia of Western Lawmen and Outlaws" by Jay Robert Nash gives a short biography on page 85.

"On July 15, 1848 Copeland shot and killed James Harvey in revenge for the murder on Gale H. Wages. Gale's father paid Copeland $1000 to carry out the murder.....He [Copeland] was hanged on October 30, 1857."

It further states that Copeland was born in 1815, that he performed various "services" for the Wages family, and the hanging occured apparently in Augusta MS.

Thsi is so weird. I was told not to long ago that my fathers side of the family ran with Jesse James for a while. The Copeland's have always been on the wrong side of the law up until my father and my Uncle claimed that it would stop. My grandfather ran with the mob. JB Copeland, he was killed in LA. when he and Johnny the fish, and a few others in John's mob threw him over for skimming off the top. I wish I could tell you more , and should be able in the future, but my family tree is in storage right now. When my father died in 1981 half the men there were mob the other half CIA/FBI ( My dad work in CID /CIA )Hope to hear from you soon.

Surnames: Copeland, Forsyth; Harrell
I know this is a shot in the dark - but I am looking for any information on The Copelands in MS. I have a great grandmother who was sent to live with an aunt. I have no other information other than her name was Josephine Ella Copeland - born in Mississippi. In the 1880 census, she is listed as living with aunt/uncle - John & Martha Harrell - Pelahatchie, Rankin, MS. She went on to marry a Charles (charley) C.T. Forsyth in Texas. Died in Pittsburgh Cty, OK

In addition to the MS connection I have - when I was younger; it was said that our family may have had a connection to Jesse James; seems kind of far-fetched but anything is possible I suppose.

I am related to the Copeland family through the Kittrell side of the family. I had read something about James Copeland's body being dug up after he was hung and made into a skeleton for a doctor's office in the town where he was hung. I think the docotor's name was Kennedy. Do you know anything about this?
