My Bain family come from Cromarty and were there in your time frame. I cannot trace this branch of the family in my files but would imagine there is a connection. Do you have any other Bain names (Donald, James, John etc) which could connect us?

Hi George:

I checked the list of Christenings that I have, the children you have christened for Donald Bain and Christian Urquhart, are the same however I don't see a match in the two family trees, maybe there is but I don't seem connect at the moment.

Mine seems to start with

Colin Bain
christened
07/07/1786 Urquhart and Logie Wester, Ross and Cromarty
son of
Alexander Bain and Elisabeth Munro
Only child I can find listed for them.

Donald Bain and Janet Davidson may be your best bet for the parents of your Donald Bain, however, The first born child that you can find listed for Donald Bain and Christian Urquhart is Thomas in 1821, so according to Scottish Naming Practies, it would lead me to believe that Donald Bain's father was Thomas Bain, maybe there was another child born before Thomas Bain that wasn't christened?

It's unfortunate that Donald Bain died prior to Death Registration in 1855. We always seems to hit a dead end at one end or the other of our research.

You mention OPR Cromarty Marriages 1820 Order 7258296 and 7258297 do those not give any information as to who the groom and bride's parents were.

On www.scotlandspeople.gov.uk there is a

Bain, Thomas 22/02/1841
farmer at Easter Navity, near Cromarty
Testament Testmentar and Inventory, Last Will and Testament
Digwall Sheriff Court
Reference SC25/44/3
7 pages
$ 5 pounds to access the information.

I don't know if you have ever retreived these before or not but I tend to go cross eyed trying to read them and transcribe them.

Tracing my Bain family tree I have certainly stumbled over your family tree.

Sorry I couldn't be of more assistance.

I'm also researching the Bains from Cromarty; Isabella Bain, who was born in 1786 to Donald Ross and Janet Davidson, was my third great grandmother. She married Donald Ross and they later moved to Jemimaville, near Resolis. I have little more than that on the Bains, but I have only just started. I'd appreciate any info that anyone could provide. Unfortunately, I haven't come across any McKenzies or Nicholsons yet, but if I do, I'll pass it along. Thanks,
Sheila

I just noted that you all have some information connected to mine. I have in common Jessie Mackenzie and Alexander Bain in my family tree. I also have Christian Fraser. I am checking the list of names and will write back. My Fraser family goes back to Tarbatness. One of my gram's sister's, Nellie Ann Fraser, married John Bain. I don't have much on the Bain family however. Barbara email: barbzwire@elp.rr.com

I don't remember whether we have been in contact in the past but I feel it is likely we will have some connection. My mother was from Jemimaville which as you probably know is only a very small village about 5 miles from Cromarty.

Perhaps you would like to contact me direct at georgehamilton@tinyworld.co.uk and I could see whether we have common ancestors.
