I am searching for information about descendants of William Cowper the poet (he co-wrote Amazing Grace). William Cowper did not have children, but I cannot find records of any siblings. My husbands family are apparently descended from William Cowper's family. William Cowper died in 1500. Any information would be appreciated.

My information was a bit out, William Cowper was born in 1731 and died in 1800 (not 1500). His parents were Rev John Cowper and Ann, daughter of Roger Donne of Ludham Hall, Norfolk, UK.

My grandfather, Paul Cowper, from Manchester, England, died around 61 years ago. He came to the U.S. when he was 14 years old, had family living in New England. I have no other information as I am away from home right now.

Hi, Lynne...I have the same info. that you do,
that William Cowper was born in Berkamsted, Herfordshire.
Mentally unstable, suicidal...I'm sure you have the
same stuff. However, I thought I read somewhere
that he had sisters...

My grandmother (paternal) had mentioned to my
mother before she died that there was some
relation to him through our family...I'm not
sure if it's her (Applebe) side or my grandfather's
(Moser) side, but I'm guessing it's the Applebe
due to the British background of the surname.

Do you have any other info. on William Cowper's
family?

all best,
shani

Hi! When I married my husband, John Russell Cowper of Phila, PA area, his grandmother swore they were direct descendants of the poet too! (Must be a Cowper thing!) So before our wedding, I did some research and did find a family tree for him. He had a brother John. No other info on him.

I am looking for any Cowper's from the Philadelphia area. I just found the 1900 census for Benjamin Cowper that lists him born in England, coming to US around 1870. Living wiht his wife Mary, her parents William and Mary Russel, their son, William (1879-before 1920?) and a border in the 31st ward of Phila. William married Margaret Montgomery and had Benjamin Cowper in 1908, who married Virginia Lydia Hedwig Heinzer and had William, Robert and Kenneth. Any mathces out there? Thanks! Tara

England genealogy sources :
http://familyrecords.gov.uk/
http://genealogy.com/englandcountry/
http://familia.org.uk/sevices
Anyone of these sites will give you many sources.
A good start for you, would be to apply for your ancestors 'Full Birth Certificate', which will give you the address, parish, & parents.
The cost is negligable.
Best wishes, Peter

I am a descendant of Frederick George Cowper who emigrated to New Zealand in the late 1800's. He was my great grandfather and farmed in the Hawkes Bay.
