I'm searching for any information anyone may have on John Hockaday of Halifax Co. NC, age 58 on the 1850 NC Census - He was son of Warwick and Mary E. Shaw. He had 2 brothers (William and Warwick) and a sister (Temperance). John is at the starting point of my family line, but no one knows much about him. He had 3 daughters with a mulatto slave. We have detailed records from those three daughters up to current. My ambitions is to learn more of him and his family, and hope to share it with my family at the future reunions. Thanks sincererly.

Dear Camille,
I'm sorry to say that I can't supply information on John Hockaday, but your help would be so greatly appreciated. I am a direct descendant of Lavinia (Leuvenia ?) Hockaday Mumford. I have searched feverishly for many years, to find information about she and her husband William. My great, great grandparents were John Henry Mumford, son of Lavinia and William, and Mary Ann Eliza Jones. Their daughter, Maryetta Mae Mumford, was my great grandmother. I knew that the family came from North Carolina, and
moved to Defiance County, OH. That is the extent of my information, except for a few family stories. I am aware that there is a family history somewhere, but have never had the privelege of seeing it. I would very much like to know more about my family. I am not certain if there is a connection between our Anderson families, but I am a descendant of Christopher Columbus Anderson, of Gallia County, OH (by way of VA and TN). Can you HELP me? Please reply to crocwyth@aol.com.

Sincerely,
Whitney Anderson Davis

Dear Camille,

I recently found out about my family's connection to the Hockaday family which may be similiar to yours; my ggg grandfather is William Hockaday, brother of John Hockaday and I read about the 3 mulatto daughters; William had a mulatto son by the name of Thomas (in addition to having a son named Thomas) and Thomas is my gg grandfather; Thomas had a relationship with the niece of William and his wife Bethsheba (her name was Elizabeth Betsy Miles; this is my g grandmother), they had Lafayette Miles; my ggrandfather had a double tie to the Hockaday family, as a biological grandson and as a nephew

Greetings,

I see from your post that you are looking for info on John Hockaday, son of Warwick and Mary E. Shaw. I have a little info on his siblings, but nothing on him. My ancestral line is through John's brother William, who married Bersheba "Betsy" R. Jackson. If you could send me some info on John I would appreciate.

Paul

Hey Paul, I've been out of the loop for some years now. William Hockaday was the brother of John. I am relation to the daughters o John Hockaday. He had 3 mullato daughter, Caroline, Luviena an Barbany. I am relatedto the daughter Caroline. He sent his daughters North to Gallopolis, Oh to keep them free. We have our family reunion every year the last week of July. We are the Scott, Carter and Mumford family. I would love to compare note. My email is anderson.1146@gmail.com. I am one of our family historians. We have excellent records, but not many of the Hockadays cared to respond to past inquiries (maybe because we are minority). Email me and we can talk. --Camille
