My mother, along with several of her brothers and sisters, was placed in the Houghton County Orphange in Michigan between 1921 and 1923. She, along with 2 sisters, were adopted out by the Good Will Farm and Home Finding Association on December 24th, 1920. Adoptive parents were Anthoy and Caroline Kohlmeier of Lake Linden, Michigan. I am trying to find any relatives of her biological parents. All I know is that their last name was: Stemich/Stemic/Stimich. Her parents came from Croatia and first settled in Wisconsin before moving to Ironwood, Michigan.

Got a chance to do some checking. The correct spelling of my mom's original surname is STEMICH. She had 2 other sisters and 2 brothers that were also adopted out between 1923 and 1924. Today, July 9th, I am in Ironwood Michigan and plan to do some digging. Then travel up to Houghton county and search around there too.

Re: Houghton County Orphanage, Michigan
We had Stimacs here in Alger County, they came from Croatia. They first settled at Star Siding near Shingleton MI. They worked in the woods or were farmers.
Some Stimacs still live here.
