I have Francis Lacharite in the US Federal census 1860 in Rulo Richardson County Nebraska. He is living with his daughter's family. In 1854/1856 he was in Woodbury to do a deposition on the birth rights of his half Sioux children for land deeds.Since I posted that message I have found more....
In 1868 he filed a right to 160 acres of land on the Big Sioux River near the Missouri Confluence, now Iowa State. In order to do that he had to become a US citizen. He became a citizen in 1868 at Vermillion (now South Dakota). One of the first to do so in that territory. He sold the land less than a year later to brothers. We've lost him from there. I have copies of all these documents. Diana

what are his brothers names. You see Francois had a son named francois -So I don t want to confuse these two. His son francois was born in 1795 in Nicolet que. The father francois was born in 1776 in montebello que. i believe. and had a concession with the seigneurie de montebello in 1822 so how does he manage to move around so much. He died in 1850 or 51 i believe...Let s try to see through this confusion...Barb.

Barb,
My email is deo@aracnet.com
I would find it easier to communication directly rather than through the boards. Would that be acceptable to you?

My Francois has been an enigma to our research group. Yes there is a Lacharite Family group. His origins are legend to us. We believe he was from Canada and the son of french settlers. We believe he was a trapper that came down to work the high plains of the USA. His first native wife was Red Blanket a Yanton Sioux. They had two daughters Mary and . He then married a Ponca Indian named Na Je Ga Tin. In 1846 a daughter was born to them in Soldier Creek area of the Dakota badlands. Almost all his life he traveled and lived on the Missouri River. He was a rascal, lived worked and partied hard. I have lots of stories and docs about him but the details are surmised. We have no direct link to the Laspron/Lampron/Lacharites of Canada. He may have changed his name when he came here. My husband is a descendant from Mele Lacharite his daughter by the Ponca woman. I am happy to share any info that I have. It would be great if we could link him up to your Metis family. Diana

Have found further information on Francis Lacharite from the National Archives. Documents of land ownership and US Naturalization at Vermillion Dakota Territory in 1867. This would place Francis' birth years from 1780-1830? approximately. I would hazard closer to 1810, though, given the dates his children were born. Also he was illiterate. He always signed his name as an "X". This fact make him much harder to trace.

I am also a descendant of Marie-Marguerite Lacharite. I am also researching her family line to see if it ties into the Manitoba metis scrip. It is stated that she was from Rocky Mountain House in Manitoba. Then someone said it was Alberta. Well there was a Riding Mountain House in Manitoba. Easy to have those confused. I would love to hear more about this. Email me at mbergen5@shaw.ca
