ELIZABETH LINTON, GREENE CO. PA -> IOWA??

Seeking info on an Elizabeth Linton, dau.
of Benjamin Linton of Greene Co. PA.

This Elizabeth may be the second wife of
my gggg gf Hugh G. Keenan, a wife who
accompanied him on a trek to Iowa in 1845,
where they settled in Marion, Linn Co.
and lived there until their deaths..

Hugh's Elizabeth was born 31 Aug 1803, possibly
in Maryland, possibly in Connecticut...

I believe Hugh would have married his second
wife between 1828 and 1833; his first wife bore
him a son (John Paine) and a daughter (Mary Ann).
Of the second union there were: Margaret, James,
Rebecca, and Hugh G., Jr.

I have found almost all of Benjamin Linton's
children, but Elizabeth, Catherine, and Rebecca
are "missing"... The only marriage date I can
find for Benjamin is ~1807, which would be too
late for Elizabeth to be born in 1803... Benjamin
was from Maryland, and there appears to be a older
daughter (20-30) in his 1830 home, but I cannot
be very certain it is Elizabeth w/o confirming
absolutely the DOBs of Catherine and Rebecca...

If you have any info on this family or scenario,
please e-mail

Yes, apparently there was a Charlotte. The following
info was posted on GenForum by a Bea Ellis:

I would like to find the parents of Barbara Hildebrand born 1785 died 19 June 1880 in Greene Co. PA. She married Benjamin Linton about 1807. They had children: Charlotte, Henry, Rebecca, Samuel, Margaret, Catherine, Mary, Elizabeth, Josephus, and Margary.

Do you know anything about this Linton family? I am
trying to find out if Elizabeth Linton (b. 8-31-1803)
was a daughter of Benjamin Linton (b. 1780) and married to
my gggg gf Hugh Keenan

Here is some more info on the Benjamin Linton family:

Benjamin Linton (b MD 1780) + Barbara Hildebrand (b MD 1785)

married Frederick, MD 2-11-1803

Benjamin's family is found in the 1830, 1840, 1850
census of Greene Co., PA, Dunkard Twp... Reportedly,
Benjamin died in Greene in 1868.

children:

Elizabeth b. ????

Henry b. ~1809 m. Catherine Abel

Catherine b. ~1810 ??

Samuel b. ~1813 m. Ann

Charlotte b. ~1813 m. Abraham Abel

Margaret b. ~1817 unmarried 1850

Rebecca b. ????

Mary b. ~1827 unmarried 1850

Josephus b. ~1828

Margery b. ~1832

Birthdates of Elizabeth, Catherine, and Rebecca
are unknown or uncertain. Margery (b. 1832) may
be the wife of Josephus rather than a sister.

We are trying to find the birthdate of Elizabeth
Linton to see if it matches the birthdate of our
relative. It would also be helpful to have the
birthdates of all the female children above to see
via available census data if it is even possible
that our Elizabeth is Benjamin Linton's
daughter.

Sorry, but not knowing for sure if the Elizabeth Linton,
daughter of Benjamin, was for certain the second wife
of my gggg grandfather, I have not explored the Lintons
or the Hildebrands beyond (prior to) their marriage in
1803.

I am not certain, but I doubt that there are any marriage
certificates, in the modern sense, for a marriage that
early.

The one person I ran on in my research that seemed to
know the most about the Greene PA Lintons was a
lady named Glenda Thompson (GlendaMT@aol.com).
She may know something about the Hildebrands as
well...

If you know anything else about Elizabeth Linton.. other
than her sister's name, I would certainly appreciate
having it. We are trying to determine an accurate birthdate/marriage date for her to see if it is possible
that she could be the Elizabeth who was married to
my gggg gfather , Hugh Keenan

Betty:

I have forwarded the text of your post on to
Glenda Thompson. I know she was very interested
in the Linton/Hildebrand lineage, and maybe she has
made some discoveries since we talked in March 2003.

After looking back over this research, which I laid
aside a few months back, it occurs to me that any
information you have about Elizabeth's siblings-- birthdates
marriage dates, etc.-- might also be useful to me... If we
knew all the right birthdates for Elizabeth's sisters,
for example, we might be able to make some inferences
from Greene PA census data as to what date Elizabeth
was born. I see that I am missing Charlotte's DOB,
for example. Would you have that by any chance?
