Joel PIERCE & Hannah IRISH

Surnames: PIERCE IRISH
Our PIERCE line goes back to Joel PIERCE and Hannah IRISH. According to the 1850 census, Joel was born c1808 in Rhode Island and Hannah was born c1815 in Vermont. Every census after that their places of birth was always listed as New York. They lived in the following locations:

1830: Joel is found in Woodbury, Litchfield, Connecticut. At the same time period Silas PIERCE and Willard PIERCE are living in Colden, Erie County, NY which is where Joel moved to.

1840: Colden, Erie County, NY
1850: Colden, Erie County, NY
1860: Flowerfield twp, St. Joseph County, MI
1870: Hannah is found in Bloomington, Grant County, WI with "George PEARCE" born in 1814. I don't know if this is a 2nd husband for Hannah, if Joel goes by a middle name of George, or if it's simply poor census data.

Joel PIERCE and Hannah IRISH had the following children:

James 1832
Levi 1833
Laban 1836
Joel 1838
Charles 1840
Silas 1841
Phebe 1843
Adelia Maria 1844
Theodore George 1847
Anna Louisa 16 May 1849
Amos 1853
Angeline 1854
Rhoda 1857
Jennetta Apr 1861
Juliette Apr 1861

Marriage records for Levi PIERCE to Grace SMITH indicate Joel PIERCE and Hannah IRISH as his parents.

Death record for Anna Louisa SPRINGSTROH nee PIERCE & CROUCH indicates her father as Joel Pierce and mother's maiden name as IRISH.

Marriage record for Jennetta SCOTT nee PIERCE to Henry E. PATET indicates her parents as Joel PIERCE and Hannah IRISH.

There are very few records filed in Grant county, WI during the 1870's so I am at a brick wall with what happened to our Joel and Hannah :-(

I should also like to point out that in the 1850 census, Pardon and Deborah IRISH are found also living in Colden Twp. c1775 and c1781 respectively both from Vermont. Information about them is available on the IGI. Although they did have a daughter named Hannah Ann, I can't connect her as *my* Hannah Irish.

When I contacted the Colden, NY historian, he stated that most of the early Colden records were destroyed by fire.

The Grant County Genealogical Society has indexed many Grant County burials. You can contact them at the address below:

By the way, I've come across the IRISH surname frequently in my research of Grant County information.

I tried that route and they didn't find these buriels indexed. :-( Thank you for your suggestion, though.

I wonder whether this could be a transcription from illegible handwriting:

Definitly one of those, "I wish I could see it with my own eyes," moments! Joel and Hannah had two sons: Laban and Joel who supposedly died in the Civil War, but they were in the Michigan infantry. That year, 1863, makes me wonder if it isn't one of them...

You probably can see it with your own eyes! Write to the Grant County County Recorder's office and ask for a photocopy of the document.
