This is a very early date for Ireland in general but also
Fermanagh, there are very few parish's that have baptism's that early.

Looking through Griffith Valuation for Fermanagh that didn't take place till late (1862) compared to most counties.

There were 53 Patterson's at that time but only one
Samuel Patterson. Names are carried down through generations.
His parish was Magheraculmoney.

Samuel Patterson, Parish of Magheraculmoney, Townland
Aghileague, PLU Irvinestone, tenant of Henry M. D'Arcy

#28 house, outbuildings and land 27 acres 3 roods 0 perches

The Parish of Magheraculmoney is in the Union of Irvinestown and would be no more than 12 miles from this town.

Google Magheraculmoney:
See Flicker photo, St. Mary's Church, Ardess, Fermanagh. This church built 1827 and has burials for 300 years for both protestant and catholic 1679-1903. You maybe able to
find gravestone inscriptions rather than Parish Registers.

BMD's on-line for Fermanagh are in two places:

www.emeraldancestors.com (free to view) pay for record

and a Irish History Foundation, pay to view and pay for
record, this is the website that has a couple of parish's with early records

Parish registers are the best way to find parents but whether they have survived from the late 1700's is a question.

You might be better off looking for a marriage but this also would be a parish record but 1784 +25 years it would of occurred about 1819. There is some hope there.

The British telephone book says too many Patterson's in Northern Ireland to list, tried an advanced search and there are 3 Patterson's in Enniskillen, Fermanagh, addresses would be sufficient for mail delivery.

You can try Museum and Heritage societies to see if they have compiled gravestone inscriptions. Try the Irish Deeds Registry-just google it is part of rootsweb but I can't remember its name at the moment

Perhaps you will be lucky and a Patterson come along
and identify him. Samuel and Mark were very unusual names for the times, just a few Samuel's here and there but Mark
seldom. If he was the eldest son he could be named after
his father or grandfather.

The earliest census substitute is the Tithe Record's which might be of assistance if his father was still living.

www.genealogy.nationalarchives.ie

In 1827 are listed only:Alexander, Robert & Thomas of the Parish Tomregan ? you could compare these to the Griffith
Valuations where I'm sure that neither father nor son
would still be living. By 1827 Samuel's father if alive would of been about 88, and Samuel 63. Why isn't Samuel in the Tithe's for Fermanagh? There are 3 Samuel Patterson's in the Tithe's 1 in Donegal 1825, 1 in Monaghan 1823 and
also County Clare. Both Fermanagh and Monaghan (East) share a border and so does Fermanagh and Donegal (West)

www.census.nationalarchives.ie

Samuel Patterson, Townland Drumboarty, Dedicated Electoral District Tirmacspird, Fermanagh age 80 (1821)Widower, Church of Ireland. Farmer

He is the right age to be your Samuel Mark Patterson's son.

I have civil registrations 1864-1875 if any of your Patterson's would fit in there, here is an example:

Mary Anne Patterson born 27 April 1868 #182 Ederney, Fermanagh
Fa: Samuel Patterson Mo: Jane Noble

Alicia Patterson born 17 July 1870 #164 Ederney

Also 1845-1862 Church of Ireland Marriages with parents names.

The parents for a birth/marriage would have been born 20-30 years before these events took place.

The Civil Registration District would be the same as the Poor Law Union for Parish's and townlands.

Samuel Patterson and Jane Noble also had a son Samuel Patterson bapt 27 Sept 1865 in Ederny, Fermanagh. The grandparents were Lancelott Patterson b abt 1788 in Drumacahan, Drumkeeran and Ann Duncan.

Lancelott and Ann had 11 children. Samuel was their 5th child and 3rd son. The first child was Thomas b 1805 Drumacahan - it is likely but not proven he was called after his grandfather who would have been born about 1765. The 2nd child was Margaret Patterson b 1805 in Drumacahan, Drumkeeran - she was the 2nd wife of my 4 x Great Grandfather Robert Lawson of Drumchorich, Drumkeeran.

In my Fermanagh research it has been quite unusual in the early records to find a middle name - where it exists it has usually been a clue to an earlier generation - so the name Mark may help to eventually identify Samuel Patterson of 1764.

Thanks so much for your help, unfortunately I can not access some databases from here but the family are happy with my research at the moment, the Patterson line has stopped here, as my husband's grandmother had one sister and one brother. The brother did not have a son. So this line of the Pattersons had stopped. This is sad but my husband's grandmother died many years ago at the age of 93. Her name was Elizabeth Isobel Patterson, she preferred Amy as a young child and her sisters name was Ida and her brothers name was Jack. Best of luck to you all researching and thanks for the information. I will sift through and see if your Pattersons link to my Pattersons.
