I bought this program as soon as it came out in the UK. I tried it for a while and put it in the drawer because it had so many problems. I was never able to register it.

I continued to use my FTM2006 v16.

Someone told me that all those with the duff 2008 are being offered a free copy of the 2009 - BUT you have to have the 2008 registered.

So I put the program on again BUT nope, it is impossible to register it.

If I click on register I get the message that there was a problem connecting to the registration server. Check your internet connection and try again.

This has been going on for 2 days now. I have disabled my av and firewall. I have even disabled the VISTA privacy all as directed. I have downloaded a patch as suggested for the update but cannot install this.

Its the most maddening program in the world.

Can any one suggest what to do with it (apart from the obvious) to get a registration sorted so that I get the hopefully improved 2009 program.

And type in 3072 in the search box

Also did you tick the heck box on the second registration screen?

Try a computer with XP. Vista has issues.

I'm sick of being directed back to searching for 3027 - the whole page is gobbledygook to me, i don't talk computer language...

the problem we have is, only just bought FTM2008, everything seems fine apart from the internet connection. It just won't connect, do File > Go Online and it says 'your computer is not connected to the internet', the web search page is just blank and unclickable, can't do anything with it, all the little leaves are grey, its 'up to date', but nothing whatsoever happens when we press something like 'register' or 'online helpcenter' etc, just NOTHING happens, no error message, nothing.

When i know for a fact it is connected elsewhere and I can login to ancestry as you can plainly see, it just wont connect to anything at all inside FTM...it has exceptions through the firewall etc, but I don't particularly want to install this patch and that patch without trying other things first. (Being new software and a fairly new computer - if the rest of it isnt broken - dont fix it...)

Sorry, a little mouse-finger trigger happy there. I have resolved the problem, I'd written this out before I installed the patch, just in case it didn't work, and posted it too early. Now I can't delete it/them.

If someone who has the where with all can delete them for me, would be much appreciated, if not, please just feel free to disregard them.

You don't Go Online thru the File menu.

When you open Family Tree Maker does it tell you that you are Off Line?

What, exactly, happens when you click Help, Online Help Center. NOTHING can't happen. Something will, probably an Error Message.

The Knowledge Base article needs to be looked at. What doesn't make sense, when you walk through the steps.

What Firewall Software are you using?

We've managed to solve our problem by downloading the SP3 patch. It's now working a treat.

I too am unable to register or gain online access. You said you solved it with SP3. Is that Windows XP Service Pack 3? If so, I'm hosed because I do not want to upgrade to SP3. SP3 gives MS expanded access to your computer, such as browsing history, etc. Does anyone know if FTM 2009 installs without SP3?

I'm getting similar problems with FTM 2009, the latest version !!!

I was previously using FTM 2006, which is still working happily, but after installing FTM 2009, it refuses to go online. If I run FTM 2006 at the same time it will search genealogy.com and give me results, but trying the same thing with 2009 and it wont go online, wont register etc etc. That means I'm stuck with using an old version until they sort out the problems, lets just hope it isnt a patch because if it wont go online it wont check for updates !!!

Sandra was referring to the 3rd patch for FTM2008.

Open your program and click Help > About. The final version of FTM2008 was 17.0.0.965. If you have a lower number, you should install the patch.

In most cases, FTM will automatically install it when you click Help > Check for updates.
