Hi,
I am researching my grandmother's family. I was able to trace the
Braisted family as far back as 1807. It seems Peter Braisted married Sarah Jane Merrell. I am trying to find out Peter Braisted's parents and grandparents. What were their names? Were they born in Staten Island? Did they come over from Europe and when? It seems the Braisted family may be from Denmark or Holland and travelled on a ship from Holland to the new world. If anyone has any information, it would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks,
Lisa Helwig

My grandmother was a Staten Island Merrill. As you probably know the two families were closely inter-married over the years. William Braisted and his wife Christina Bauman came to this country about 1700 from Holland. There is a land deed for him in S.I. in 1730. two sons: Johannes b.1715 and Andries b.1719. Johannes' son Peter was baptized 1743. At this point records seem to be lost until 1773 with Egbert and Rachel Braisted upon the birth of their son (also) Egbert. There is also a John Braisted who in 1790 married Nautchie Martling. Their son Abraham is apparrently the brother of Peter Braisted who married Sarah Jane Merrill. Although I cannot be certain of that. They certainly lived in the same house being known as "Braisted on the hill". Sorry for the gaps, they make this a challange. Let me know if this helps. The more I delved into it the more intriguing it became.

Thank you for the information. I am so excited to tell my grandmother. Where did you find all this detail? I am going to research so more. I thought I was at a roadblock! It seems there is a lot more research to be done. Thanks so much!

BRAISTED- OSTRANDER

Thanks for your quick response! I think that you have the right Gertrude, I had no idea she had a first marriage and I had only two of the children she had with Nathaniel Ostrander. I find some reference to the birth of Nathaniel J. in 1843 being both in "NYC" and on Staten Island, so I am not sure if that is why I could not find more of the Ostranders on that microfilm or not. Since I had no parents for Gertrude I could not match her to a family of Braisteds.

I wrote out all the names I had in case anyone else matched. I was surprised to find a Vanderbilt connection, but it is very, very distant. I am more intrigued in that just because I like history and grew up on Long Island.

The Ostranders and the Braisteds are my main semi-brick walls in this, and I don't know if that is because they were originally in Manhattan before the findings in the Moravian church films, or possibly they were at another church.

Anything you can shed light on in terms of Nathaniel, Gertrude and who her parents were would be appreciated.

Thank you for your inquiry. Of course I found a Gertrude Braisted who married a Merrill relation which has nothing to do with the Gertrude Braisted you're referring to. (or does she)? Genealogy is like that. Nothing is simple but always intruiging. As for your Gertrude Braisted please give me some time to sift through my personal mess of papers. In the meantime: I find a Gertrude Braisted B.1802. She married Evo (?) Dossay with whom she had two children: John and Elizabeth. After his death she married Nathanial Ostrander. They had five children:William,Lydia,Mary,Gertrude, and Nathanial J. (1843). Nathanial J. was prominant in the Moravian Church you mentioned. I somehow feel it's the Vanderbilt connection you are most interested in. Probably can't help you there as there is no link to my family. (I've looked after discovering Lees) Egberts sound very familiar but Bogarts are too long down the line for my branch. But give me time.

Do you have any information in your BRAISTED searching on a Gertrude Braisted who died 3 nov 1867 aged 65 y, 8 m 18 days (this from microfilm records of New Dorp Moravian Church via the FHC)? She married Nathaniel OSTRANDER who died on 12 Dec 1860 aged 80 y, 9 days.

The couple had two children that I know of :

Mary Catherine OSTRANDER born 19 Aug 1837 in NYC, baptised 15 FEb 1874 in Castleton Corner Richmond, died 16 Mar 1913 - she married a BOGART but don't know who

and Nathaniel Jacob Ostrander born 24 May 1843 in NYC, died 19 Feb 1917, he married Maria Louise VROOM, born 22 Aug 1848, died 17 Feb 1905 in New Dorp Moravian Church. She was the daughter of William Van Rensaleer VROOM and Catherine Maria EGBERT.

Catherine Maria EGBERT was the daughter of John EGBERT (s/o Abraham and Nancy/Ann Martineau) and Lydia SEQUINE (d/o John and Rachel)

The EGBERT line married into the VANDERBILT line via Tunis EGBERT, born 7 Nov 1792, who married Isabella VANDERBILT (d/o John and Elizabeth TAYLOR on 11 Feb 1815) and his second marriage 26 Mar 1835 to Charlotte VANDERBILT DeForrest (d/o Cornelius and Pheobe Hand, sister of "Commodore").

Am interested in corresponding with anyone researching this particular line.

Cannot seem to find Gertrude's parents. Nathaniel was born in New Hurley, Ulster Co. and lived there before moving to Manhattan. He did not move to Staten Island until 1858. Have you tried any Ulster Co. resources? This search might dry up when we reach Staten Island because these are pretty much their retirement years.

If anyone can help me trace my genology from Peter Braisted (B 1807), married to Sarah Jane Merrill back to Jan Janszen VAN BREESTEDE (from Breeste, Netherlands)

I can work from both directions but gat lost going back at Peter Braisted (B-1807), (my great-great-great grandfather). And I can work forward from Jan Janszen (B-1584) from Breeste Netherlands to just about the mid 1700's.
That's where I can't link the two. And I'm getting frustrated!!!! LOL. I think it has something to do with the spelling change.
(Van Breestede - Breestede - Brestede - Brested - Braisted)
