This is my first posting to this list.
I am interested to know if there are others that I can communicate with that are researching this MacDonell / MacDonald family.

Angus MacDonell and Annie ( Nancy ) Stewart
This couple had a family of 18 children. I believe all family members were born in Scotland and came to Glengarry County, Ontario around 1830 and most of the children came with them. The children that I know of are 3 daughters referred to as;
Auntie, Alex Roy ( wife of Alex Roy MacDonald )
Auntie, Captain Grey
Auntie, Piper
some of the son's are;
Charles MacDonell, who married Mary Campbell ( daughter of John Campbell and Margaret McPhee )
Donald MacDonell, who was sent to Rome at the expense of the Bishop. He was ordained in Rome, died and buried in Rome.
Jim MacDonell of Athol
Black Jim MacDonell, father of Fr. Ranald MacDonell
George MacDonell, postmaster in Cornwall until his death in 1902
Ranald MacDonell
Donald MacDonell
John MacDonell, married Nancy McArthur ( daughter of Charles McArthur and Flora MacDonald )
Another son was studying for the priesthood and died en route to Canada and was buried at sea.
The other 6 sons are unknown but believed to be in Glengarry County, Ontario

The above information comes from an old family letter that was written in the early 1900's. The author of the letter was a great granddaughter of Charles MacDonell and Mary Campbell, who lived at Kenyon, Con. 2, lot 30.
Charles MacDonell's oldest daughter Margaret married Alexander MacTavish in 1860 and they lived at Kenyon, Con. 3, lot 27.

Another note in the family letter says that this MacDonell family were known as McRaghals.

I welcome all the help I can get at sorting out my MacDonell family.

Katherine

Hi Tal and Katherine: John Campbell and Margaret MacPhee were my ggg grandparents as well. I am looking for information on my grandfather's burial place. My grandfather was Angus John Campbell (b. 6 apr 1838) and I believe he died 19 May 1907 and was buried at St. Finnan's in Alexandria. Any help with this would be appreciated. Also I do have information on this side of the family if it would be of help to anybody.

Thanks

Neil Macaulay

Neil,

Angus Campbell did die on 19th of May 1907 and was buried in the cemetery at St. Finnan's Alexandria. I assume a walk through the cemetery would locate the stone. If not I believe the Morris Funeral Home has the plan.

Let me know how your line goes down from John and Margaret.

Tal

Hi Tal:

Thanks for responding. I have looked for Angus John Campbell's stone at St. Finnan's with no luck. His wife Flora McDonald (1846-1933) I believe is buried there as well. I just haven't found them.

Here is how I am related to John and Margaret:

ggggrandparents: John Campbell(1795-1862) and Margaret McPhee(1766-1843)

gggrandparents: John C. Campbell(1795-1862)and Mary McDonald(1815-1853)

ggrandparents: Angus John Campbell(1838-1907) and Flora MacDonald(1846-1933)

grandparents: Christy Ann (Christina) Campbell (1888-1977)and Alexander Lorne McDermid (1888-1956)

parents: Inez Marie McDermid (living) and Neil Joseph Macaulay (1915-1992)

myself

If you know when or how the Campbell's came to this country - I would appreciate any information.

Thanks

Neil

Hi Neil,

Your line would make you and I 3rd cousins once removed. Margaret McPhee's parents were Alexander Roy McPhee and Catherine McAlpin and they came from Aberchalder, Inverness Scotland with the MacMillan voyage in 1802. On the same ship there is a John Campbell and I am sure this is ours. John was born in 1765 and his father was Duncan born 1740.

Tal:

Yes I do believe we are related! I do have John as being born in 1765 (not 1795 as in my previous note). I did not have any information on Margaret McPhee's parents, so thank you for that. I have heard of the MacMillan voyage in 1802 and I believe that there were three ships involved in that emigration. Do you know which ship they sailed on? Also do you know if John's father Duncan also made the trip?

If at any time you would like to contact me directly, my email address is: macaulay@amtelecom.net

Thanks

Neil

Neil,

The three were the brigs Friends, Helen and Jane and I have the passenger list but it does not distinguish which people were on which ship. There was only one Campbell on the list and that was John so it is assumed that Duncan never came. I have tried for many years to locate Duncan and or his homestead but no luck.

Tal:

I have that 5 of John and Margaret's children were born in Scotland. Alexander 1789, Duncan 1791, John C. 1795, Donald 1801 and Margaret 1805. I also have 3 born in Canada Angus 1808, Mary 1812 and Annie 1816. If my records are correct (and I am not saying they are)- did Margaret and the children come with him? Also I have Margaret(the daughter) born in 1805 in Scotland after John came to Canada. I hope you can shed some light on these questions.

Neil
