Is Clifton, Arizona large enough to have had its own newspaper in the late 1950's? If not, what is the nearest larger town whose daily paper would have covered local Clifton news? What is the closest university to Clifton where such a newspaper might be on microfilm? I'm asking all this because I'm researhing boxing for my dissertation and local fighter Zora Folley competed in Clifton several times, I would like to look for any newspaper publicity that might have been alotted to these fights. Hope someone can help. Thanks for reading this. Andrew Lindsay (Univ of Toledo)

The nearest town with a newspaper would be the Eastern Arizona Courier, based in Safford Arizona, which is a 45 minute drive to Clifton, AZ. You can reach them on the internet at www.eacourier.com, also you can try eastern arizona college at www,ea.cc.us/; they have a good library with alot of information. There are also some elderly gentleman that are still living, that used to box in the old days.
Hope this helps....

There is also a book on the subject of boxing and the boxers that came out of the Clifton and the surrounding area's. The book is by Al Finn. I don't know if it is in publication anymore.

Andrew,
I read about your interest in boxing, and am wondering if you are in Toledo, Ohio? My husband's father boxed there as "Kid Blackie" circa 1950s. Would you happen to know about him? His name was Rollie MacDonald Goodin, and he died Feb. 5, 1960.
Would appreciate hearing from you.

Clifton's Official Newspaper up to a few years ago was the Copper Era, I believe most of the archives were sent to Safford and are with the Eastern Arizona Courier. However, Boxing was big back in the 50's and 60's and was covered by the Arizona Republic. Hope this helps

My uncle Joe Martinez was a boxer from 1949-1952. He boxed with Ernest (Zora) Castaneda and Hilberto Quintana. I've been trying to find pictures, newspaper clippings, anything i can find about him. I'd appreciate any help. Thanks
