I am the great great great granddaughter of
Dr. Daniel Arter who died in Cairo, Illinois.
I am new to the searching of my family tree. I
have been able to trace back as far as him and his
wife, Milly. My family on my father's side comes
from Cairo and we all still live in the area. I know
where he is buried along with his wife, Milly! If Anyone
can contact me to fill me in on Dr. Arter more, I would
really really appreciate it.
My husband is a descendant of Dr. Daniel
Arter and his wife Mary (May) Jarrett through
their daughter Sarah Rebecca Arter and her
husband, Benjamin F. Echols. Sources of
information I have located on the family are:
Family Bible, located in the Cairo, Illinois
Public Library. It is also reprinted in the
magazine, The Saga of Southern Illinois gen-
ealogy quarterly, Spring, l888. It lists
three wives, May Jarrett, Mary Ann Moyer and
Milly Moyer, his children, parents, the Moyer
parents and the marriages of his children.
The magazine includes a reference to his di-
vorce of Mary Ann Moyer. There is also an
Arter Family history in the Lisbon, Ohio Pub-
lic Library. If you wish to contact me, I
will share the information I have for this
family. Darlene LaGasse
Darlene, hopefully, this email in response to the message that you posted three years ago concerning Dr. Daniel D. ARTER, his wives, and the family Bible, will still reach you.
1) I have photo copies of the original ARTER Bible, now on display in the Cairo Library. They were taken and emailed me by another Daniel ARTER descendent, i.e., someone descended from Laura ARTER RITTENHOUSE, one of Daniel and Millie ARTER's daughters. I also have a copy of the ARTER Bible transcription printed in the 1988 issue of the SAGA.
2) Daniel was divorced from his first wife Mary JARRETT--not from his second wife, Milly MOYER--after he moved west (i.e., to Illinois) and Mary remained in PA. I believe the statement in the SAGA is an error in the transcription of the ARTER Bible entry.
3) Although Milly had already given birth to three of their children, Daniel's divorce from Mary was not final until October 1837, not long before he and Millie were legally married, according to the IL Archives Marriage Data Base and to the ARTER Bible entry. (I have a photocopy of the original 1837 Daniel and Mary ARTER divorce degree that I ordered from the Union County, IL, Recorder.)
Although I have seen NO documentation of proof, I have read that Millie ARTER died after many years of marriage to Daniel; subsequently, Daniel married Millie's sister, Mary.
Sandra, hopefully, you will receive my response to your email, posted in August 2001, concerning Benjamin F. ECHOLS. I am the 2G-Granddaughter of Charles D. ARTER (b. 13 Sept 1829 PA > IL), son of Daniel D. ARTER and his first wife, Mary JARRETT. Ref. ARTER Family Bible: Daniel and Mary's daughter, Sarah Rebecca ARTER (my 3G-aunt), b. 19 June 1820, married Benjamin F. ECHOLS, Daniel's business partner in Pulaski, IL, 26 June 1836. Benjamin died 16 Oct 1850, and Sarah remarried Louis Jackyard on 18 Apr 1852. Sarah had children by both husbands. If you would like to contact me at my email address, I would be pleased to share/exchange whatever information I have with you.
This is an update to the posting that I made in 2003 regarding Daniel D. Arter and his wife, Millie Moyer. Since my original posting, I have learned that Dr. Arter had no third wife. His second wife, Millie, outlived him and is buried at his side in Cairo City Cemetery, Villa Ridge, Pulaski County,Illinois. In June 2006, my husband and I visited their gravesites there.
A 3G-granddaughter of Daniel Arter and Mary Jarrett has set up an interactive web site for descendents of Dr. Arter. For information about joining the group, contact Becky, firstname.lastname@example.org
