I just came across another Hehir that may be related to some of us.His name was Michael Hehir born in Dublin to parents from County Clare. He was a very famous sports announcer in England. His name became O'Hehir when he became an announcer. County Clare has a hurling ground named after him. Anyone have anything about him?

Hi, Eileen, There was an extensive write-up on Michael O'Hehir in the Irish Times some time back. He was a premier sports announcer, doing GAA finals (football and hurling) and horse races. I saw and heard him years ago on ABC's Wide World of Sports, co-hosting events with Jim McKay. I'll look into his Clare roots as time permits.

Michael O'Hehir was born in Dublin in 1920. married Molly Owens in 1948. Father, Jim from Paradise, Co. Clare and Mother Esther Sheehan from Newmarket, Co. Clare. He was an only child.
i am especially interested in his story as I have the same name. I have not been able to find a relation to him.
The furthest I have of my line is my great granfather, Edward Hehir, Kilmallock, Co limerick. B 1875 married Catherine Fitzgerald

Are you asking about Micheal O'Hehir, the GAA sports broadcaster? His father was James from Co. Clare. If so, he published an autobiography in the mid-1990's.

Thanks. I was replying to an earlier post. I actually have the book, that is where I found the info on him. I have been trying to see if his family is related to mine. I need to go back further.

I think this broadcaster is my mother's uncle - I can check with her but I swear I remeber hearing about him - do you want more information?
|
I am pretty sure he is related to my mother (uncle) Are you still researching and I'll ask her more info My maternal Grandfather was O'Hehir from Count Clare - there don't seem to be many O'Hehirs on here, O'Hare, Hehir etc but her name is definately O'Hehir

Hi, I know it like 9 years after you posted comment but I just seen it today. i just wanted to correct you. Michael O'Hehir is Irish. born in Dublin to parents from Co.Clare. started broadcasting at age 18 commintated on 99 all Ireland finals but was unable to commintate on the 100th because he had a stroke. It was his dream to do 100 finals but it never came through. he died in nov 1996. Leaving his proud 5 kids wife and many grandchildren behind. Michael O'Hehir was a great commintater,a great man and a great grandad. Elaine O'Hehir (Grandaugher)
