his mother Mary Viriginia Osborne
grandmother Elle Virginia Allen
her father Thomas Respass Allen
Thomas parents were Jessie Allen and Nellie Respass
Nellies parents were Thomas Respass and Prudence Redditt
Thomas' parents were Henry Respass and Sally Topping
Hope this helps someone

I'm trying to straighten out this Respess line, and am running into date problems. Here's what I have:
Richard Respess m. Elizabeth (Ormond?), born c1762; son:

-- Henry Respess m. Sally Topping, I'm guessing born 1780-90; I have a note for Henry saying he was sheriff and a major in the militia in 1784 - but his birthdate can't be much earlier based on Richard's date? Maybe a different Henry. Their son:

---- Thomas Respess m. Prudence Redditt; Thomas would have to be born no earlier than 1795 if Henry was born 1780; their son:

------ Ransom Respess b.1802 m. Sarah Windley b.1805; father Thomas too young in 1802.

Maybe there are too many generations here. Maybe Richard & Elizabeth were born earlier, c.1740 and Henry c.1760 and Thomas c.1780. Can anyone clarify?

Suggestion - always assign estimated birthdates if actual ones are not known. Without doing this, I wouldn't have realized these problems. :)

Ray--I am descended from Richard Respess through his son Ormond. b. 1797 and supposedly 1st child In figuring Ormond's sibs I have Henry pegged as being born around 1799. I do believe at present (all is given to change : ) that Henry married Sally Topping based on a deed dated 18 Aug 1821 from Samuel Topping brother of Sally, to Henry Respess. I have noted your entries in the past and thought that a generation was misplaced. In a hypothetical construct I could place Thomas, father of Ransom as a brother to my Richard, And then further that Thomas was then their father. These are the Respess living on the North side of the Pamlico. Roberta

Another wrinkle in the puzzle. I can tentatively place the birthdate of Thomas Respess's (husband of Prudence Redditt) at 1760/1765, based on the 1800 & 10 (Beaufort Co), 20 & 30 (Washington Co) censuses. The ages match up from one to the next, and I don't have any other Thomas Respess's these could be, and in 1820 and 30 his household is near Redditt's - so it's logical that this is him.

So clearly too early to be son of Henry & Sally. Plus, the 1800 Beaufort census lists him as Thomas JR. The only Thomas I have who could be Thomas Sr would be a Thomas (c1758-1782) who married an Eleanor, and was son of Thomas Respess & Mary Carroway. I don't have much on this famiy, so just a guess for now.

This Thomas b.c.1758 was brother to Richard who married Elizabeth Ormond(?). Since I already have his death date at 1782, he can't be the later Thomas, but could have been his father?
