My mother's maiden name is Winebrenner. My grandfather's (her father) name was Leonard Winebrenner. He died in 1983. I am not sure what year he was born but he would have been around 50. He married Ruby (do not know her maiden name). They had 6 children, 1 who died in infancy and another who died at 16. With the exception of my mother, they all still live / lived in Cumberland, MD in Allegheny County. Sad to say I do not have any more information. I am beginning my search on this side of my family so maybe we will be able to link our families together some day.
Feel free to e-mail me directly at any time.

I have some information on your families. The Winebrenners were tied in many ways to the Crowe family of Western Maryland. My maiden name was Crowe.

Charles Edward Winebrenner was born Nov. 1, 1912 in Allegany Co. and died Nov 18, 1980 in Frostburg. Virginia Bittenger was born May 1, 1914. Charles parents were James Greory Winebrenner born April 1888 in Garrett Co, MD he married Minnie Scott who was born 1896 in KY. James parents were John E. Winebrenner Born Aug 1864 in Allegany Co and died 1921. His wife was Sarah E. McKenzie born Dec 14, 1860 In Allegany Co and died Oct 14, 1903 and is buried at St. Ann's in Aviton, Garrett Co. John's parents were Isaac Winebrenner jr. born abt 1839 in Allegany co and died Dec 2, 1910 in Garrett co. He married Margaret Ann Crow (daug of my ggg grandparents Jacob Crow and Margaret Winebrenner) born Nov 23, 1837 in Allegany Co and died March 3, 1904. Isaac jr's parents were Isaac Winebrenner Sr. born Oct 18, 1804 in Midilothian, MD and died April 3, 1895 in Echart, MD he married Nancy Barnard born Sept 9, 1804 in MD and died Apr 5, 1880, both are buried at Porter Cemetery in Eckhart, MD. Isaac and Nancy were thought to be the parents of my gg grandmother Mary Ann Winebrenner who married Nelson Crowe her first cousin. Mary Ann Winebrenner was American Indian. The parents of Isaac Sr. were Morris Winebrenner born abt 1771 and died July 1849 in Allegany Co. He married a woman who's first name was Hannah, last name unknown. she was born about 1775 and died after 1850.

Leonard C. Winebrenner was born June 2, 1916 in Garrrett Co. I had his date of death as Dec 29, 1993 Frostburg and buried at Mt Zion Cemetery in Garrett Co. I could be wrong and it may be 1983. His parents were James Winebrenner and Laura Layton. James was born Sept 29, 1870 in Garrett Co and died 1945. Laura was born Jan 1874 and died 1950. Both are buried at Mt Zion as are most of their 11 children.
James parents were also Isaac Winebrenner Jr. and Margaret Ann Crow. So looks like you 2 ladies fit into my tangled roots.

I have some pictures I can share with you. The Winebrenner's have been my brick wall for some time now and if you have anything you can share with me I would greatly appreciate it. I have unanswered questions on just who the Winebrenners of Western Maryland were as I can not hook Morris up with the Winebrenners of Frederick Co, MD or the family of Johann Christian Weinbrenner. Where did the Indian blood fit into this family?? Were Isaac jr and Nancy Barnard really Mary Ann's natural parents or Aunt and Uncle. Were there more American Indian Winebrenner's out there? Mary Ann, I was told was Algonquin. Though recorded as white on the census records, I have pictures to prove her Indian heritage. I have read the Algonquins came from Canada and the upper regons of the eastern states and down into Delaware.

Thanks so much for sharing your information on the Winebrenner family. My Aunt gave me some of that information. I just haven't had much time to update my information on-line. If you don't mind sharing those pictures, I would like to see them.

WOW!! Thanks so much for sharing that information. I was hoping someone would eventually have some information on that family.

Leonard C. Winebrenner was my grandfather and he married Ruby, my grandmother, who is still alive. My grandfather died in 1983 so your original date of 1993 is incorrect. 1983 is the correct year. My grandparents had 6 children - 4 daughters and 2 sons. 3 daughters and 1 son are still living and all have children.

I plan to share your information with my mother (Leonard and Ruby's oldest daughter) and will add any additional information and/or dates that I can.

Thanks again!

There is a Winebrenner Theological Seminary in Findley, OH. From them I bought a biography of Rev. John R. Winebrenner who pastored a German Church in West MD before the Civil War. Apparently, he founded what is now the Church of God with major branches in Findley, OH, Anderson, IN and New Mexico.

I am looking for information on Hestor Jane Winebrenner, born abt 1830 and died sometime between 1880 and 1905. She married Frederick B. Zais, lived in Frostburg, and had six children: Charles, Mary (married George Hartig), George, James, Morris, John (only Mary, George, and Morris survived into adulthood). Hestor and husband are reportedly buried in the Porter Cemetery in Eckhart, which makes sense because Winebrenners are buried there. But I have no information on her parents.
