Surnames: Cline
Can someone tell me where the Cline Graveyard is in Blount Twp.? I am trying to find the place of burial for my 3rd gr grandfather , Nathaniel Cline that died in Jan 1863 in Gallatin, TN during the Civil War. I have been unable to locate his place of burial. Nathaniel's brother, Spencer Cline, had a son named Nathaniel who died in Oct. 1886. He is buried in the Cline graveyard and I'm hoping to find his uncle there also.

According to the Master Index of Burials for Vermilion County, Illinois and the cemetry listing, there are no Cline's buried in this cemetery.
This could be an error or a stone could have been destroyed over time. The cemetery reading is the only verification of a burial with a death date as early as 1863.
There is also no listing for the burial of Nathanial Cline who died in 1886.

Descendants of John B Cline

Generation No. 1

1. John B1 Cline was born Abt. 1800, and died October 03, 1856. He married Catherine Shoemaker December 05, 1811. She was born Abt. 1800, and died April 30, 1830.

Notes for John B Cline:
In answer to your original question "did the elder John B. Cline have a John B. Jr.?"

Yes, one of his sons was named John Cline, born 4 October 1828, died 23 May 1830 (dates from the family Bible). And no, I have found no record so far of what the initial "B" stands for. And so far, I have found no clues leading to any information about parents or any siblings. The earliest record for the elder John B. Cline is his marriage bond application in Harrison Co, KY on 3 December 1811. The family moved to Vermilion Co, IL in 1830. The 1850 census gives his birthplace as Pennsylvania but since that record also gives questionable ages for three other members of the household, I can not rely on the Pennsylvania info until I find other documentation.

His son Nathaniel named a son John B. Cline (born around 1859 in Vermilion Co) who would have been young to have married in 1866. However this is the only other "John" Cline that I have found in his descendents.

In 1830 Christian Cline/Clyne bought land in Blount Township next to John B Cline's land. However Christian soon moved on, I think I may have found traces of him further and further west. I do not know if he was related or if he had descendents who remained in Vermilion County.

RE: your info on John B. Cline. Thank you so much. Here's some more info for you. I edited some of your entries with information I can confirm from the Cline family Bible and from research I've done. They printed the Bible information in one of the back issues of the IGHS. I can look up the issue number for you if you don't have access to it already. I've been working on this family for quite awhile now. Hope to print it all up and send it to the Illiana. In the meantime, what else can I send to you? :-) Linda Hedges linda.hedges@ssec.wisc.edu

To: Allisongen@aol.com (Susan Allison). Susan, Thank you very much for the information I have been looking through it and I'm still trying to fit some pieces together. I have a copy of pension papers for John James Cosat have you ever seen them if not let me know and I can copy them for you. I really am just getting my feet wet on the Cosats'. I have a birth date for Dora Cosat daughter of John James and Frances Rosebaum but it is after the date of the death of her mother so I don't know which of the dates are right. I have a picture of Dora and a small picture of John James Cosat if you are interested. I'm still trying to go through the papers and make the connection between me and you. Will keep reading and sorting. I have found the grave of John James and Emma Cline Cosat but went to Johnson Cemetery and have been unable to locate the grave of Dora Cosat Poulter. Would like to talk to the caretaker of the cemetery this spring and go back for another look. You asked my address it is 312 W Chestnut Street, Hoopeston, IL 60942.

Subj: Re: Cosat - Date:2/18/99, From: Deyo x 4, Hi, So glad to get your reply!! I do definitely tie in with your line. My gr gr grandfather was John James Cosat (son of David and Nancy Truax Cosat) and his second wife, Emma the 2nd gr grandmother. Nice to meet you! I feel very lucky to have had you spot this posting for several reasons. First, I have some photos that I believe were taken in Danville of the Cosat's (well, a few of them) but I'm not absolutely sure. Maybe you could take a look. I also would love to exchange info on this line with you. I have come across several people that are also descendants through other siblings of John James. Would you want their names? Have you pursued the Comingore line much? Secondly, I have several lines that originate in Danville and have been there many times doing research. Another line that I am searching is Hastings, specifically Pearley Fay. He, yes HE, was my gr grandfather. Adpoted by his uncle James Hastings and his wife, Sarah after the death of his natural parents. I live near Kalamazoo, MI so Danville is about a 6 hour drive from here. Would be very interested in sharing info so keep in touch and if you would be willing to take a look at these pictures, I'd be very glad to mail you copies as I don't have a scanner to E-mail them.

from mothers book, One Flag, One Country and Thirteen Greenbacks a Month. Edna J. Shank Hunter dhunter@mail.cdsnet.net (Dan Hunter)
"note: John Daniel Shank had writen about 50 letters home during the Civil War and mother found them in the attic. She based her book on those. Just prior to my father’s death two years ago (1976), he was able to provide yet another missing piece to my story. We had always wondered what had happened to Martha Salts, the sixteen year old dark-eyed girl that John Daniel had hoped to make his “wieded wief.” A few years ago, while compiling bits and pieces for the Shank genealogy, in the dark recesses of the Vermilion County Courthouse my sister came upon an inquiry from one Walter Salts of Indiana concerning his family history. My sister contacted him by letter and mentioned that, although she was not his relative, her great-uncle had planned to marry a “Marthey Salts,” but he had been killed in the Civil War before he could do so. We soon learned that Martha was Walter Salts’ great-aunt, that she had married a man from Danville named “DeMoss,” but that all traces of her family had been lost. When my father learned this, he suddenly realized that he had personally known Martha Salts for many years! Martha DeMoss, her husband, and her seven children had lived on the farm adjoining “Little Gus’s” farm on the outskirts of Danville. Her children had been “best friends” and schoolmates of my father throughtout his childhood. In fact, one of Martha’s grandsons eventually married John William’s sister. Thus, we are related to Martha Salts after all! When I arrived in Danville, I visited my uncle, Luther Cline (Martha’s grandson) whom I had known all my life but had not suspected that he was related to John Daniel’s “Marthey”. And so, our story had come full circle, and life goes on....with a slightly different cast of players."
