I am looking for any one with the surnames of Karpie or Sulima that would be from Grodno. My great-grandfather Ivan Karpie and great-grandmother Malania Sulima came to the US in early 1900's from Grodno to Ellis Island and ended up in Connecticut. I now live in Maine and am searching for any family either in USA or Belarus.

Just begining my family tree research, my Great-great-grandfather - Joseph Karpie immigrated from Lithuania in the late 1890's. As some point he moved to Hazelton PA to work in the coal mines and married Rose. He supposidly owned an estate in Lithuania and when Nicholas II began taking the baltic states, due to his "status" he was given a choice to pledge his alliance to the Czar, or immigrate to the USA. I am not sure of where he origionated from...

That is interesting that your great-great grandfather is a Karpie from Lithuania. You are the first person I have heard from with a Karpie in their backround. Belarus and Lithuania are very close to each other. If you don't mind how old are you? And when would your great-great grandfather have been born? John(Ivan) Karpie had several brothers one of which had 21 children. Also where do you live? I now live in Maine but grew up in Connecticut. Maybe we have a common link. Please respond. Thanks!

Re: Karpie or Sulima Family from Grodno
My grandfather was Joseph Karpie he died around age 45. My father said they lived in PA and his father worked for a coal mine. At some time, he moved to Buffalo N.Y. and my father went to school there. I don't know a lot about my Dad's family. I know there were a lot of children and my father was one of the younger ones.

I found a Joseph Karpie on the 1920 Census who had a wife Rose and children: Margaret 17, Pater or Peter 15, Daniel 12 . I believe he is the father or the Peter Karpie who had a daughter Alice whose family I am trying to research. Have you found out any more about this family? I believe Peter married Anna Antonina Poskaitis? Does any of this sound familiar?
