Native American surname JACK

I have many JACK relatives - names include Mary, William, Francis, Flora, Malinda, Amanda, Arabelle, in southern IL in the 19th and early 20th century. I've never found, however, the Native American JACK who many in the family say existed. Does anyone have a clue as to who this could be? Story is that this is by marriage - either a squaw or chief who married someone. Many thanks. Nyla Verisario

Hello Nyla,

My name is Shawn Jack and I was born and raised in Southern Illinois. The names you list are in my family tree. In fact, I believe that the Francis Jack you mentioned is my GG grandfather. Did your Francis Jack marry a Charity Futrell? (Charity may have been a nickname, her real name may have been Harriet Futrell).

I would love to get in contact with you and learn what you know about the Southern Illinois Jacks. I am researching us for a family book. I have lots of information I would love to share.

As for a Native American Jack, I have never heard this story, so I can't help you there. But I may be able to help you in others ways. Hope to hear from you.

I too have memories of conversations by my elders of an American Indian (Cherokee)in my Hawkins family tree. My great, great grandmother was Mary Jack b. 1849 in Cherokee County Alabama. Her father was J. Ramsey Jack b. 1822 in Green County Tennessee. I found a family of Jacks who lived on the Chocktaw indian Reservation in south Alabama, but no trace of J. Ramsey Jack nor Jeremiah Jack. I can't find any trace of J. Ramsey Jack after 1860. I also found a
family of Jacks that lived on an Indian Reservation circa 1800

Have not made much progress. My great mother Mary had a sister named Harriet and one named Margaret. She was named Mary C. Jack. Her father was Jeremiah Ramsey Jack. I believe his father was John Jack and his father was a brother of Jeremiah Jack.

Did any of your Jack family settle in East Tennessee or come from there? My Great grandmother was Mary C. Jack and her father was J. Ramsey Jack born about 1806 and from Tennessee.

I would like to correspond with any descendents of Tennessee and Virginia Jack family. Jeremiah Jack Sr was born 1750 and had a brother name John and one named James.

I found some people named Jack in the Choctaw Indian Reservation in 1920. Major Hoyt Hawkins, hoythawkins@bellsouth.net

Hi my name is Ginny Jacks. We are from Greenfield Ind area originally. I live in MI.

My dad used to say that we were related to Geronimo via the Lucinda Dobbins Family. I looked and found nothing. I was told by the Cherokee Reservation in AZ, that I needed her Indian Name and tribe. That I do not have. So this is where it stopped.
