Found On SSDI But Not On California Death Index..Ideas?

Surnames: Lawton
I have been unsuccessfully searching for an individul's death date for some while, and finally found an SSDI entry for a person I believe to be him. The birth date lines up as well as last residence of San Francisco. His name was Lewis Lawton, and he is listed in the SSDI as Louise Lawton. Last residence is listed as San Francisco, Ca and Zip Code of last residence is 94131 (San Francisco). Is this zip code the place that his benefit check was sent? There are NO Lawtons listed in the California Death Index for this date, not even "Louise Lawton". What am I missing and why can't I find a death date in the California Death Index to match the SS one? I suppose it is very slightly possible that he died in a different state, but that is highly unlikely. He had lived and worked in San Francisco for years. He was 64 at the time of his death, born 28 May 1912, and I believe that whoever reported his death to SSA mispelled his name as "Louis" instead of "Lewis" and perhaps a clerk misread it as "Louise". I am stumped. The SSDI only gives the month of February and year of 1976 as date of death. Anybody have any ideas on how I can find a death date and place?

Maybe he was on vacation, or visiting someone out of state when he died.

The dates line up exactly and the name is similar. I let you be the judge. He is listed as male even though the name is Louise.

THANK YOU! Yes, I believe this has to be him! This is why we couldn't find him. Still....what are the odds that not only is his first name mangled in one index, but then his last name is completely changed in another death index? Very very odd.

This morning i mailed a request for a death certificate for him, noting that his first name may be spelled "Lewis" or "Louis" or "Louise". However I requested the record on a "Lawton". I did include the social security number listed on the SSDI, so I wonder if they will tell me the record can't be found, or will they send "Louise Lawrence's" death certificate. I guess in the case of the former, I will shell out another $14 and request Louise Lawrence's death certificate.

I think that whoever keypunched the info into the index may have lost their place and keyed the name above Lawton, which, going alphabetically, may well have been "Lawrence".

This relative has been such a mystery and the topic of much discussion in the family. He just kind of dropped out of the family for some reason. He's a mystery i would really like to solve.
