Rebekah, there is a William Bowers on both the 1860 & 1870 census in Norwich. In 1860 (pg. 158) he is age 1 living with William, 31, Maria, 28 & Hannah, 6. The older William is a gate tender & all were born in NY. In 1870 (pg. 248), William is age 12, living with Maria, 38 & Hannah, 18, in the home of Edwin Peck, 39, a lumber man, his wife Emily & dau. Emily. Maria is listed as a domestic servant.

Thanks for the info. I'll look up those census records and see if we've got a match! Are you related?

I located the page you referred to - 158 - in the census, but I don't see any Bowers listed. I also checked pages 157 and 159 just to be sure. Am I missing something?

I did find William listed in the 1870 census.

Rebekah, the Bowers are on the 3rd line down from the top; family # 1861 on pg. 158. The census taker had bad handwriting but the index has the name as William Bowers & once I looked at it closely I could see that it was. I`m not related to the Bowers.

There was a William Bowers born to Sarah Bowers Blanchard in May 1860.
Per notice of Marriage 2/8/1860 issue of the Oneonta Herald,: Marriage ..... In Franklin, on 26th Ult., by Rev. E.C. Hodge, Mr. David BLANCHARD, of Franklin, To Miss Sarah BOWERS, of Middletown, Conn.
1900 Fed Census:
Blanchard, David 1816 Jan NY
Blanchard, Sarah 1819 Sep NY mrd 40 yrs, 1 child
Bowers, William 1860 May NY age 40 Single Step Son

It is apparent that this Wm Bowers was born after the marriage of David and Sarah and that Sarah's previous husband's surname was Bowers, as evidenced by her son's surname.

The 1880 census of this family shows some of David's children by an earlier marriage, as well as William who is shown as Blanchard, William B.

As William used the Bowers surname as an adult, I assume that the censustaker made a mistake on the 1880 census when he listed William with a surname of Blanchard.

I am descended from the Blanchard line so have no direct involvement with the Bowers line but would like to identify the father of William and what became of him. He apparently was still with Sarah in September of 1859 but she remarried in Jan 1860, to a man with 6-7 children still at home..... She must have been a glutten for punishment!
