why would great grandfather,put down on every census forms,as single,when he was married,he went to usa in 1883,his wife never joined him,he died in usa 1936.thanks.

Probably a poor man's divorce.

thanks,he was a irish chaclolic,from ireland,so dont see him been divorced,not at that time.?.

"Poor man's divorce" is simply saying that you're widowed or single, not actually getting a divorce. Happened a lot. Before 1858, a full divorce required a private act of Parliament so the opportunity was only available to a few people. After 1858, it was prohibitively expensive, thus the poor man's divorce.
