I am Kathryn Trelc Watts. My great grandfather, Anton Trelc came from Austria in the late 1800's. settled in northeastern Penn. He too was a coal miner. Anton's wife was named Mary, the name Treltz was on her death certificate. Anton's second son, Anthony J. Trelc (coal miner, lumber man) was my grandfather, he had 4 sons and 2 daughters. His oldest son, Anthony P. Trelc was my father. We were always considered Slovenians. I have more info, My 3 uncles also have information. My father passed away in 1985. I would love to learn more about my family. I know that there are Trelcs in Slovenia today but do not know where or how to reach them. There is also a Trelz in St Louis.

Have you tried checking the Ellis Island records for your great-grandfather's arrival? I checked for Trelc, Treltz and Trelec, but there are no entries for the first two versions, and none that fits for the last one. According to the Slovenian telephone directory, there are over 15+ Trelc in the directory today. Unfortunately, most appear to be scattered in different towns, though the majority seem to be in the area north of Ljubljana, around Kranj, Radovljica etc. There are quite a number of parishes in this area so you will have to narrow down the possible place of origin for your Anton Trelc. I suppose you have tried all the available records in the US to determine where Anton was born? If he was still alive in 1930, the census for that year might give his place of birth. It was one of the questions asked at that time. Hope this helps.

My great grandfather, Anton (Anthony) Trelc came to northeastern Pennsylvania in 1893 He was a coal miner from Austria, the Slovenian area, northwestern Yugoslavia formerly. He was born in 1853. He was married in Austria and had at least one son, Frank, that we know of. Frank joined him in the states. Anton left his wife in Austria, and did not marry until she died in 1901. He married my great grandmother Mary Pechar, Jan, 1902 and my grandfather, Anthony John Trelc was born January 28, 1903. He was he oldest of 5 children.

I wonder if Anton's brother was John Martin. It would be nice to know. Is there anything else you know about him.

Listed on the immigration register right under Anton is Martin Mars. He was 30 at the time. Also my cousin found Anton listed as Anton Trelo. The C was nearly closed at the top making it look like a O. Check out that possibility in your search.

If you have any questions I would be happy to help with what our family knows.

Sincerely, Kathryn Trelc Watts
