Surnames: Fegan
My Great Grandparents before moving to Scotland, Edinburgh lived in Hilltown. It is a very small town near Newry. I think it is in County Down. When my granddad died a lot of our history disappeared, If any one knows anything please email me.

Hi Terri,

Thanks for replying, but the Sarah Fegan in my family was married anytime after 1850 when Bernard Fegan married Sarah McLinden. And the only other Sarah Fegan wasn't born until 1906 to James Fegan and Mary Anne Rudden.

I know my family also had cousins in Newry-the Grants and the Sloans. However, I believe the last link to my family a man named Henry Fegan died in 1987.

Sorry I said Henry Fegan, meant Henry Grant, who was a cousin of the Fegans.

Hi Anne, I have a lot of Fegans in County Down, but I'm not sure from your query what timing you're talking about. Although my GGgrandparents, William and Nancy (Campbell) Fegan, left Down about 1850, my GGgrandfather's siblings remained in County Down.

I have a copy of the Newry Telegraph, dated December 23, 1876, which reports the death of my GGGgrandfather, William Fegan, on the previous day at the age of 106. His father was Henry Fagen. That William was married to Elizabeth McKee, and they had 9 children whose names were: Betty, Molly, Sally, Rosie, James, John, William, Henry, and Edward. Edward, my gggrandfather, was the youngest and born in 1824. I believe that Betty was the oldest and born in 1810.

The other information I have is sparse, but Betty married John Skillan on 27 August 1846, Rosie married William Carson, James married Mary Cunningham on 12 July 1842, William married Margaret McGlaughlin on 10 September 1846, Henry married Margaret Grey on 3 November 1849, and Edward married Nancy Agnes Campbell on 12 April 1849.

Hi, thanks for all the info. I honestly have no idea if any of those names are connected to my family.

The oldest date I have is of Bernard Fegan (born 1837) and married to Sarah McLinden (1839-1912) they left Ireland in 1879, with their 3 sons for Edinburgh. I've been searching for Bernard's siblings, if any, to find out the names of their parents. I think that my family were spread over County Down and not just Hilltown, as births were registered in Rathfriland and Drumgath.
