There is a John Witman buried in Robeson Plow Cemetery, Berks Co. His second wife was Christiana (Boehn) Stafford, who was born 1778 and died 24 Sep 1851. She is allso buried in Robeson Plow Cemetery, John Witman and Chrsitiana Stafford were married after Christian's first husband James Stafford died. Christiana is listed as head of household in US Censis 1810 Robeson, Berks Co, Pa. She married John probably before 1816. John Witman and Christiana had two sons:
Peter Witman born 18 Aug 1816
Daniel; Witman born 24 Aug 1820.

Does anyone know birth and death dates for John Witman and anything about sons Peter and Daniel?

Who was John's first wife????

Thanks,

Karen,

I found a marriage in St Paul's Union Church in Amityville:
John WITTMAN to Hannah BLEDEM 12/29/1793.
source: Vol 2 of Berks Co Marriages, 1730-1800, by HP Publishing, puv 1987.

Could this be the first wife of your John WITMAN?

Hi Diana,
That could very well be his first wife. I have two books:
Berks County Church Records of the 18th Cemtury Volume 1 and Volume 3. In Volume 3 is shows:
St. Paul's Church Amityville
20 Dec 1793
John Wittmann to Hana Biedem

I have a bunch of his census images filed away, will have to get them out and check the family age counts.

I figured he married my Christiana Boehm Stafford before 1816. They had 2 sons
Petet Witman 18 Aug 1816
Daniel Witman 20 Oct 1820
I have not been able to find anything else on the boys.

Thanks so much !!!!!!!

Karen...

I don't know if you have this marriage or not:

Marriages at First Reformed Church, Reading, Berks Co:
Hannes (John) WITTMAN, Robeson Twp to Christine BOHM, Robeson Twp on 4/19/1813.

Regarding James STAFFORD and Christine, they had a son John born 8/19/1799 died 3/31/1873, buried at Alleghenyville Church Cemetery in Brecknock. He was married to Lydia ESCHELMAN, dau of Martin ESHELMAN and Catharine ECKERT.
Lydia is buried with him at Alleghenyville. Her dates are 1/13/1811-3/26/1871. I am still looking for a death date for James STAFFORD, and also for John WITTMAN/WITMAN.

HI Diana,
Good to hear from you again, I have been corresponding with a distant cousin, just over the last month maybe month and a half. He descends from Christiana and John Witman, He gave me a lot of info. It is on my other computer, so I will go there and send it to you. I know all of their children now and birthdates, they lived around Johanna, PA, famous for a foundry or furnance something or other. This cousin lives right there. He also found out that Stafford and Witman are buried with Christiana in Robeson Plow, but I guess their stones are underground now, he knows the secretary of the church there. Busy with Christmas baking, but this afternoon, I will send you what I have. Oh, I almost forgot, I have a picture of Christiana's grave stone, someone who also lives right near there, went to cemetery, it is on findagrave.com. Do you have a picture of her stone?????

Take care,

Karen

Hi Diana,
Can you send me your email address??

Here is a descendant report on John Witman: See notes under Christiana for info from the cousin. I descend through Christiana and first husband James Stafford, their son John married to Lydia Eshelman had a son Samuel, who came to Michigan.

Do you know anything about Christiana Bohm's family??

Hi.. I,am related to this person thru John Witman who had a son Johnathon who was born in 1815. Which is recordered in the Trinity Church record of being Babtized. John and Christiana were married in 1812 which is also in the Trinity records. To further back this up his(John) father Valentin was married to Barbara Boehm and also A Jacob who was married to a Boehm which is also recordered in the wills dept at Reading and I also have some physical findings of this. I though I might clear this up for you....thanks....dgw

Hi....I picked up your chart off of my sons computer. Boy ..Was i amazed of a whole new line. There was a name of Esechlemen(spelling bad) that has been in this area since the 1750 or so. As a matter of fact they have a bus service for the local school district and are very prosperious in the area. As far as Alleghaneyville church goes there are alot of Boehms buried there but only a few are visible to the eye. John Witman and Christiana had a bunch of kids There was Johnathon,Daniel,Peter,Issac,Christiana, and a William. I am on the Johnathon side of the family who had a son Henry(harry) ,whohad a sonGeorge, who had a son Harry, who had me...I have alot of information on the Boehms. there name also goes by Beam in this area. I am in touch with another Beam who is related. I am going to get in touch with him and see if he has any info. Im wondering if when Stafford died who brought up his son. I,m wondering if John Witman had any help in this nature? There is also I think of hand there is a mentioning to a Stafford in the Johanna Furnance book I have. That place was functioning from the late 1700 into the late 1800 and his in the process of being restored which is very close to me.....get back to you later...dgw

Hi....Yes.Trinty Luthern church is in Reading,Pa...As a matter of fact I am located within a mile of Plow Luthern Church(Robeson Township). Alot of my descendents are all within a stones throw away from me. Now John Witman is the son of Valentin Witman, whose father was George Adam Witman.Valentin Witman was married to a Barbara Boehm. of the Alleghaneyville area. I also have another Jacob Witman who married a Boehm but I do not have a name on them. There wills are located in the Courthouse in Reading. Also Barbaras will. Sorry, I cannot pickup your listing on my old computer using a windows 95. Are you related somehow?...dgw...

Hi... I was in the church cause I knew the secetary and she should me the cemetary records. James and John Witman are with Christiana but there headstones are below ground according to the records. No dates or info given. What I can,t figure out is that The Schwartzwald church is located in Exeter Twp.east of Reading . there is a cemetary there which very big. I don,t know too much about the records [its on my list of things to do] which is a big list. Go to Berks County Historical Society or Tri-County Heritage Society web site and you might find some info. I am going to look at some books I have and see what I can find for you. You say you are in Mich. Right now were getting pounded with rain and wind....See ya all later....dgw

Hi..... In reference to your email. I,ll try and get that info in another email. What I have here is pretty lengthy. It is from the Governor Mifflin Area History book which I have a copy. Where the area is -is southern berks county to the lancaster county line. Which Mifflin is a school district. Which shares southern berks with Twin Valley school district. Now mifflin goes from Shillington, Kenhorst, Mohntown, Adamstown, south to the line......Now the first one I have is in reference to the Boehms on my side. Now whether or not Christiana is in this I haven,t found out....the Boehms..Johann Adam Boehm(Beam), born1727 in Swabia, immigrated to Pennsylvania about 1742 with his father Jacob Boehm and brother Peter. He was a blacksmith and a farmer, having acquired over 300 acres located on the Lancaster-Berks County line about one mile west of Maple Grove. He served in the Revolution, having been enrolled in 1777 with his sons Peter and Adam in the 1st Company of the 10th Battalion of the Lancaster County Militia. His wife was Margaret, dauther of Leopold Yost, and they had six children. Jacob, married to Eve Messner, Adam, married to Margaret, daughter of Johann Peter Hoschaar;John, whose wife was Susanna; Michael, whose wife wasMagadalena: Christian, whose wife was Elizabeth; and Barbara, married to Valentine Witman.(my side). Johann Adam dies in 1800 and is probably buried at Allegheny Union Church................The next part concerns the Eshleman of the area here also of which there are still some....Peter Eshleman, born about 1683 in Switzerland, immigrated to Pennsylvania in 1733 and obtained 150 acres in 1743 located on the Allegheny Creek just Eastof what is now Horning Road. The western boundry of Peter,s land passes through the center of the cemetary at the Allegheny Mennonite Meetinghouse. Peter died in 1754 and was probably one of the first to be buried there. He and his wife Magdalena had six children (all of whom were born in Switzerland); Benedict; Magdalena;Christian; Barbara, wife of Christian Bachman; Jacob, whose wife was Elizabeth; and Peter, whose wife,s name also was Elizabeth...............Now remember that Boehm can also mean Beam and Bachman can be Bowman, Bauman etc. Depending on who was hearing there name at the time like the orginal spelling of Witman is Wittmann...I have some on Hoschauer if you need it. Now Christian Bowman(Baumann) died in 1790 and is buried in the cemetery at Allegheny Meeting house. Now the Bowmans are credited with the town of Bowmansville just south over into Lancaster County.......There is a saying in Berks County that if you were born here -everyone is your relation. I find this out to be tru with all the people I uncover when I start branching off into other descendents... Also you got to remember that at the time all they had was a horse and buggy or wagon to get around to meet people and most of it was there own language. Oh and by the way Berks County was formed out of Lancaster, Philadelphia and Chester Counties in the late 1700,s. That might help you also.....see ya...dgw..

++++++++++++++++++++Hi.... its me again... In reference to your email. There is a small hamlet of Johanna and there was and his now a Historical site that is called Johanna Furnance. I,m there for the past to years when they have there festival. Its only about3-5 miles from me. Now Johanna furnance was the main area for work, farming trades etc in the late 1700 into the late 1800s. they made anything out of iron, from pots to stoves and yes cannonballs. Most of my family and off shoots had some dealing or another with the furnances or the mines in the area that produced the iron ore which was all in close proximenty. Now in the Johanna Furnance book, which i have a copy, Christiana Stafford is recorded as being a widow in 1809 to 1811. Now there is no mention of a Stafford. What I was thinking was if they married In Schwartzwald church. They could have been in that area. Which is Exeter Township today which is across the river and East of Reading near what is called Mt. Penn. That is called Jacksonwald today....As far as i know of noone has done that to a grave at Plow on refernce to buried headstones. I guess you probably have to get a court order to do that and find out what the stones say if any. I just got to go with what is printed!... In reference to The kids of John and Christiana they are Peter, Daniel,Catharine or Christiana, Johnathon, and a William, and a Issac... I might mention that John also goes by Johann. My side starts with Johnathon who had George, John , Christiana, Mary, Henry(harry)(William), Ellen. My side goes to Henry(harry) to his son George, to his son Harry, Ruth and to Harry,s son Darryl(me).....Now I might mention that Johnaton,s daughter Christiana in archives is actually Sarah and my Aunt had mentioned that her Aunt was Christyann and she had a beautiful little girl.. Now there last name was Simmers and and they are buried down in Elverson. From what I found out there is Bible related names to the Witman side of the family and mostly all but Johnathon were babtized at Plow church....I have some babtized dates.I really haven,t tried to hard to look for the off shoots of my line just here and there.. I do know that John and Christiana lived on Twin Valley Road and they had a store Called Johanna store which I saw on a map of th1840,s. I t was referred to has J. Witmans store and down the road was Johnathon and down a bit was Peters place and down further was a William Witman ( haven,t made a connection on him). to the Chester Coutnty border going into Elverson from Berks County. John and Christiana house is still standing. They have a junk yard for vechicles around the place the family operates out of....What makes it good is I,m right in the middle of all that is related to me. I also have 2 deeds dating to 1723 and to 1753 that are from my side and from a off shoot side of the family of my gr grandmothers. If you get a chance somehow try and get ahold of a BerksCounty map or a large Pa. map with
Berks County on it. These places are hard to try and type for you to understand were i mention they are. I belong to the Berks County Historical Society and Tri-County Hist. Society and help at Johanna Furnance when the festivals are...........Oh did you notice that John and Christiana died on the same day? What a shocker. I wonder what happened? I, m going to have to do some digging on that one. Right now I,m in my busy season. I work for a Department store chain based out of Reading,Pa. Something like Walmart. We are in Pa., Md.,Del.,Va.,Ny,and Nj. We just opened 10 stores this year alone. Its been nuts and I get to most of all our 40 some stores at one time or another. I,ve been with them about35 years now going on 36. They are Boscov,s Department Stores. Get back to me with what you found out.....see ya....dgw

Christiana was first married to James Stafford who was born in Ireland and died in Pennsylvania after 1800. He is also believed to buried in the Robeson Plow Cemetery yard next to Christiana but his gave stone is no long visible. They were married 19 Jan 1797 in the Schwartzwald Reformed Church, Exeter Township, Berks Co., Pennsylvania. They had a son John Stafford born 19 Aug 1799 in Brecknock township, Berks Co, Pennsylvania. He was baptised also at Schwartzwald Reformed Church, Exeter Township, Berks Co., Pennsylvania on 17 Sept 1799. The Schwartzwald Reformed Church is now the Schwarzwald United Church of Christ. James appears in the 1800 census in Robeson Township, Berks Co, Penn (1 male under age 10, 1 male 26-44, 1 female under 10 and one female 26-44). Christiana appears as head of household in 1810 same place. (2 males under 10, 1 male 10 thru 15, 1 female under 10 and 1 female 26 thru 44). So after 1800 and before 1816 James died. Christiana married John Witman sometime before 1816 as their first child was born in 1816. The two sons of the marriage of John Witman and Christiana Boehm Stafford were:

Peter Witman born 18 Aug 1816 and
Daniel Witman born 24 Oct 1820.

There are other Witmans also buried in this cemetery
+++++++++++++++++++++++++++
There are probably records about James Stafford in the Robeson Plow church, but so far I have not been able to get anyone to do research for a reasonable amount per page.
++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++
Even though I have not been able to prove it yet, I believe Joseph Stafford born 1801 in Pennsylvania is the son of James and Chrsitiana and brother of John. I have a lot of census images for him in Ohio and when I get them organized I will post in the notes section. when I get them organized I will post in the notes section.

Karen,

I am not sure about Barbara EVANS being first wife of this John WITMAN. For one, there is a baptism at Plow Church for Sara WITMAN, dau of Johann WITMAN and Barbara EVANS born 6/3/1812 and baptized on 7/16/1815. Now by 1815, John WITMAN had already married Christine BOHM (4/19/1813 at First Reformed). So I can't see how this could be the same John WITMAN....

I have problems even with this marriage, because I wonder why the marriage at First Reformed doesn't show that she was widow of James STAFFORD? The marriage shows she was Christine BOHM. Maybe she wasn't his widow. Ever thought about divorce? Maybe James and she divorced and she took her maiden name back?

There is no will/estate for a James STAFFORD in Berks Co - I checked the website for the Register of Wills. So where did he die? And where was his estate probated?
I didn't find him in Chester Co or Montgomery Co Wills either.

When she and John/Hannes WITMAN married at First Reformed, they were both shown to be from Robeson Twp. But, she could have relocated there from another area shortly before they married.

As far as her parents, etc.......I don't have anything about them. I thought that the earlier BOEHMs were in Lancaster Co.
There is a will for a Peter BEHM/BEAM, Robeson who had 11 children. She could be one of his daughters.

Will Abstracts:
Peter BEAM, Robeson
Will 3/8/1809, proved 4/3/1809
Provides for wife Susanna.
Mentions having sold his real estate to sons Samuel and John, dividing estate among 11 children.
Children of deceased son Jacob and deceased dau. Barbara to have their parents' shares.
Others not named.
Execs: son Samuel and son-in-law Peter FORMAN.
Wits: Christian TREAT and Peter SCHWEITZER.

I don't have all 11 of his children. But the ones I do have were born in her birthrange.
