I'd like to know how many children HGB had and what happened to then - marriages, sons and daughters... I have 6 names for these children (Napoleon b.1808, Hortence b.1810, Arthur b.Jan/1817 in Longwood, Henry b. 6/12/1811 in Trieste, Akogibse-Charles-Henri-Francois b.1824 and Andrew). I saw he had 3 children, other source says 5.
I'm looking for Suzanne Bertrand, maybe granddaughter of the General, that married Joao Cancio, a portuguese man, which descendency branch is in Brazil.
If anyone has any information about descendancy of the general HGB, please send to marici.marchini@terra.com.br.

Family history has it that my grandfather, Henry Bertram. who I remember well, was the son of of Henri Bertrand who in turn was the son of Henri Bertrand, the General in Napoelon's army. Family lore has it that Henri--tho son, fought a duel in France and had to leave the country in a hurry. He fled to Germany and married a German girl. When they got to this country, the name was booked as Henry Bertram. They settled in Pennsylvania. My grandfather was also named Henry Bertram. He was an engineer for the Pennsylvania Railroad. One of his earliest memories was of feeding a soldier in the family barn in Pennsylvania during the cival war. He died in the early forties. My mother Ethel Bertram Donovan was his daughter. She was born in 1995 and died in 1987. I am her only susrviving daughter.

Carolyn,
Did you ever hear anything about any brother or sister of your great grandfather? Maybe some family history or any diary or document?
I just can't find any source of Henri-Gratien Bertrand descendency.
Thanks for your reply.

I believe I have here a prayer book written in German which belonged to my Grandfather, but as of today I haven't found it. It may be lore--but I remember hearing that the Henri who fought a duel, fled to Germany, married a German girl. The first wife died, and he married her sister. My grandfather lived, I believe, in Cambria County Pennsylvania. I under stood that he (the one from France and Germany)had children by both wives. I just looked through my mothers papers, and I may have it wrong. I found that she had listed Peter Bertram as her grandfather and Henry Bertram as her father. My mother was the only child who had children. There were two of us, but my sister has died. I do not remember cousins on the Bertram side, but I grew up in Washington DC and believe there were Aunts and such that I didn't know. My grandfather was born in this country. His mother's name was Catherine. If I locate more on thisI will let you know.

Hello! Me may very well be distant cousins. Supposedly I am descended from Henri-Gratien Bertrand as well. I am able to go as far back as my great-great grandfather Willam Wallace Bertrand but I would like to find out more as well. I hope to hear from you and possibly we may be able to help each other find out more.

I too am seeking information about descendents of Count Henri Gratien Bertrand. My maternal grandfather is Ernst Bertrand, born in France, moved to Germany he passed away in 2008, his father was Rudoplh. I don't know who his father was. But I know that Henri was my great great great grandfather. If anyone has more information on the children's descendents that would be great. Thank you.

my grandfather was Henry Bertram. The family name was changed from Bertrand to Bertram when my great grandfather came to America. My grandfather grew up in Cambria County, Pa. I also grew up hearing that his father was from France, but had to flee to Germany because he fought a duel after dueling was outlawed. He married a German woman before he immigrated. He was a son of General Bertrand, who followed Napolean to Elba.

Hello. My father's Mother was french, from Montreal,a Bertrand, decent of the General. Her name was Caroline. She had brothers Who worked here in the states and most were Quarry workers, rugged and drinkers, nice hard working men,of whom I remember only one.She married a Bowton who deserted her and her two daughters,Ellen Edna, and I'll ask my Dad,one of Edna's sons, what her name was.I know my Dad loved his Grandmother, one of the few people he has expressed open affection in recall to.She passed on her crepe recipe and the Napoleon lore.It seems to me that French history has tried to erase this lineage, claiming Fanny and Henri's children had no children themselves.Refer to the death bed painting with Fanny and the children for at least a glimpse.I have even suspected a direct line to Napoleon,as my brother and Dad bare a striking resemblance, and my Dad has a cut and dry outlook, and is on the extreme side of tough love.He was born in 1921 and is still travelingand active!
