Isabella DeWar (1816 - 1888)

Surnames: Dewar, Campbell, McGillivray
I'm hoping to find information regarding the parents and siblings of my 3rd great grandmother, Isabella Dewar.

b: 1816 in Lochiel, Glengarry, Ontario
d: 2 Jan 1888 in Fort Erie, Welland, Ontario
m: 11 Oct 1838 in Lochiel, Glengarry (per 1861 census)

Husband: Miles Campbell (son of John and Mary McGillivray Campbell)

b: 1816 in Glengarry
d: 8 Sept 1908 in Thorold, Welland, Ontario

I have found Isabella, Miles and their children on the 1852, 1861, 1871 and 1881 census records (as well as 1891 for Miles). They "removed" from Glengarry to Wellington sometime between the 1852 and 1861 census years.

Children:

Mary b: 1841 in Glengarry
Catherine b: 24 Sept 1843 in Glengarry (my 2nd great grandmother)
John Archibald b: 25 Apr 1845 in Glengarry
William b: 1847 in Glengarry
Sarah Ann b: 1850 in Glengarry
Donald J b: 1854 in ? (probably Glengarry)

I've listed their children as I know how names are repeated from one generation to the next and it might provide a clue as to Isabella's siblings or parents.

Here's hoping for a connection with some of the other known Dewars in Glengarry.

Further info. A son John B 27 July 1839 and baptized 28 Aug 1839 from St. Columba Presbyterian Church, Lochiel Twp.
Parents are being as noted on Lot 9 17th Indian Lands.

At time of Catherine's baptism the family is noted as being on 36.6. From my researching this would be Lochiel Twp. A Campbell family was on this land.

Thank you for the additional information, Donna. I wouldn't be surprised if there were other children (at least one more - between Sarah Ann and Donald). Can you tell me if the church records are available on microfilm?

Hi Lois:
I wonder if your Isabella came out to Canada from Scotland with a group of (McLures) Dewars sometime in the early 1830's. The reason I pick that date as a known Dewar Girl had a child baptized at St Columba 1837. Your Isabella was married 1838.

There is a book out there with McClure/Dewar info in it but I cannot remember the name. I will look for this book and its name and author.

Hmmmm...that would prove interesting. I found a website that lists marriages in Upper East Ontario for that time period and there are four Dewars listed:

Sally m. Donald McDonald 1836
John m. Mary McDonald 1836
Ewan m. Catheron Cameron 1840
and my
Isabella m. Miles Campbell 1838

They could well be siblings.

The website is http://www.ontariogenealogy.com/easternontariomarriages.html

Even though the parents won't be named, I used the email link provided on the webpage to send a query regarding the cost of the complete marriage record.

I have found the name of the book I read about the McLures (Dewars) some time ago, 'The MacLoers of Galder, Glenelg Scotland'. Researched and Published by Donald Keith Dewar of Thorold ON.

I do know that Sarah Dewar who married Donald McDonald was a sister to Penelope Dewar whose husband was Andrew Fraser of East Hawkesbury ON. I note three brothers came out with them Malcolm, Donald, and Roderick.

I also have a John Dewar married to a Marrion McDonald 19th of Jan 1842. In some of her children's baptism she is noted as Sally. Marrion-Sarah-Sally-More are the same name
- different variations.

Thanks so much for your input, Anne. I really do appreciate it. Though not new to family research, I am new to the Dewar line and it will, no doubt, take me time to get up to speed. That's why I'm hoping someone will recognize the name Isabella Dewar from Lochiel, Glengarry, Ontario and connect her with some other Dewars.

That's awesome, Mike. Do you have a public tree that I can check out?

I have notes from Penny at Glengarry Archives.....
"Tracing our family tree County of Glengarry Ont." by Donald Keith Dewar.
Isabella's father Robert Dewar and two other Dewar relatives (likely siblings) James and Ann boarded the ship "John" in Scotland in July 1817 ... their intention was to locate in Glen Sandfield area of Lochiel Township. Some received land in Quebec .... Cote St-George and St-Telesphore.
