Flanagans in Texas

Flanagans in Texas

I'm looking for anyone with history of Flanagans in Central Texas, specifically Tyler. My grandfather was Clifford Flanagan. My grandmother was Roberta Flanagan. Some of our ancestors were involved in the Texas military. I'm told that two of them had their pictures in the state capital at one time. One may have been an early state senator? And the other a higher ranking officer in Texas?? I don't have alot of info. I believe there was also a James Wainwright Flanagan. He traveled alot and I think there's a statue of him in Cartagena. I have some old newspaper articles on him from my mother's papers, but I'm not sure of the relation. Thanks!

Well, Sara, you may be getting more than you bargained for. We are half third cousins once removed. I have a fair amount of information about the Texas Flanagans through Senator James Winwright Flanagan. I tried to condense the print out a bit but it is just LONG. This is family group sheets starting with your Grandparents and flowing back as far as I can. Hope this helps.

Notes:
In 1747, James received a land grant of 400 acres in Louisa Co, VA from King George II. He probably did not live on this track. The property was divided among three sons, Ambrose, James and Whittle, each with 133 1/3 acres.
Whittle and his wife, Judith, made their home there and probably built the home called Red Hill. It is a story and a half frame house with a brick basement. It has a gabled roof with three dormer windows, massive free-standing brick end chimneys, a small four-columned front portico and six-over-six windows on the first floor.
It was passed down through Whittle's daughter Elizabeth, and in 1873 to her daughter, Julia. Julia deeded it to her daughter, Ida, in 1911. In 1964, Ida deeded it to two of her children Ruby and Graham. When I visited in 1986, Ruby and her niece Sarah Amick and her husband J.R. Amick still lived in the house.

Thanks so much for the information. I've seen quite a bit of it already, but there was some interesting new info in there too. Could you tell me how we are third cousins once removed? I remember stories about several of my grandfather's siblings and would love to hear more.

Our common ancestor is James Winwright Flanagan, the US Senator. He had three wives, Polly Moorman, Elizabeth Lane and then Elizabeth Vinson (widow of Eli Ware). One of the children by his first wife was Webster Flanagan, who was your great great grandfather. By the second wife, J.W. Flanagan had four sons, one of whom was Samuel Houston Flanagan (named after a dear friend of the family who was by legend staying at the house the night he was born). He was my great grandfather and HALF brother to Webster (thus the half in our relationship.) Their children would be half first cousins... specifically for us, Charles (for you) and John Covington Flanagan Sr. (for me). We then move down another generation to Clifford (for you) and Frederick Kittrell Flanagan (for me). They are then half Second cousins.
One more generation down is either your mother or father (I don't know because you did not mention them in your message) and myself, John Covington Flanagan II. We are half Third cousins.
The once removed comes because you are one more generation down. Removed indicates how many generations are separated from the parallel descent of cousins.

I hope this was not to convoluted to follow. If you would like to exchange more information, I would love to fill in your side of the Flanagan's of Texas. If you have the ability to Import/Export GEDCOM files that would make it very easy. My email is Johncovfla@aol.com.

Wendy it is good to hear from you. In looking at what I have on my records, it sounds like you are descended from Ernest, son of Charles Flanagan and his wife, Ellie Vinson. Charles is the son of Webster Flanagan and Elizabeth Graham.

My confusion lies in who Luther Alexander is. You mention a brother Clifford and I believe that he is Ernest's brother. I would love to exchange info with you. My email is johncovfla@aol.com

My Flanagan relatives came to the Collin County, McKinney, area from Tenn. and/or Va. Could these be related to your list of relatives. My g grandfather was J(John). R. Flanagan, first in Texas and stated on Texas Census as being both the above records. He married Eliz. A. last name unknown in one of the above mentioned states, probably Tenn. since I have read that supposedly he came from Polaski County or near there.
Sorry the details are so fuzzy, but knowing his middle name might help--haven't been able to find it yet. He was born in 1858 and died in 1924. He is buried in Wylie, Tex, Collin Co. cemetery.
If you know of any connections please let me know.

Thank you!

Wow! Do you want more? I am one of 9 children (born May 5, 1954) descended from James Barry Flanagan whose father was Edward Vivien Flanagan (married Lucille Collier). So Edward Vivien's father was Charlie? My sister said his name was Clifford. Anyway, Edward Vivien's grandfather was definitely David Webster (who died 10 days before my father was born, May 5, 1924 and May 15, 1924, respectively.)

So: David Webster (1832-1924)
Charlie or Clifford? dates?
children: Vera, Emmet, Clifford, Edward Vivien (died 1979 at 87 years?), Eric, Nell, Ernest, and Bonnie.

Children of Edward Vivien Flanagan (Known as Jack) and Lucille Collier:
James Barry (1924 to 2002) and Terrence (Bud)

Children of James Barry Flanagan and Walterine Mayerhoff
Kathleen 1/31/49
Maura 12/18/49
James Barry, Jr. 4/3/51
Patricia 5/5/54
Deirdre 4/4/56
Walter Edward 8/12/58 to 5/18/70
John Christopher 8/31/60
William Stratton 12/22/62
Thomas Clark 5/18/68

Child of Terrence and Peggy Flanagan
Lynn Born 1951 (one son)

So far, we have no more male Flanagan's from this branch to continue the name.

My grandfather, Jack (Edward Vivien) worked as a clerk for the Cotton Belt Railroad. He was a very dear grandfather who spontaneously composed songs about us grandchildren in a style that I now recognize as kin to that of Cajun country. He told us that Sam Houston used to drink buttermilk on the porch of his grandfather's house and share his religious faith. I remember a beautiful letter he wrote describing his move from Henderson to Tyler. He and brother Emmet (or perhaps, Ernest) walked a cow to Tyler. Grandpapa never learned to drive a car and rather preferred walking whenever possible. He was very health conscious (never mind the cigars), ate balanced meals, lifted weights, hunted, fished, taught Presbyterian Sunday school, wrote letters, and watched "Gun Smoke" every week without fail. From him I learned such expressions as confounded *#!!!!!, rascals, carpetbaggers, dagnabit, rapskallions?, etc.
He was a gentleman, affectionate, and generous. We adored him as we also adored our father who was also a gentleman, affectionate, and generous. Papa, however, was not interested in sports, though he was interested in just about everything else. His profession was internal medicine (a 60 to 80 hour work week and probably the last doctor to stop making house calls), he read voraciously (history and theology), painted, built furniture, built model boats, planes and rockets tor blasting, collected and listened to classical music, taught a very scholarly adult class on the Old Testament, bathed his children, read us books, sang with us, prayed with us at bedtime, photographed us, laughed with us, corrected us endlessly, loved Gilbert and Sullivan, Laurel and Hardy, grew vegetables and flowers, ....I used to get up early in the mornings so I could spend time with him drinking syruppy coffee (yes, I'm short.), reading the paper, and trying to impress him one way or another (usually to no avail...his compliments were few, but meaningful-----He made up for that by being affectionate. I think my Uncle Bud (Terrence) is the same way.
The Flanagan family that I know is very devout religiously---two of my sisters married Presbyterian ministers and my third sister married the son of a Presbyterian minister. One of my brothers was preparing at one point to be a Christian Education director and my grandfather wanted my father to be a Presbyterian minister. This trend seems to continue from what I've read about James Winwright and David Webster.
I would be interested to know if other branches of the David Webster clan have similar attributes to the ones I've mentioned. (musicians, writers, doctors? )

I was looking back over records and correspondance and Ernest, my grandfather is the son of Luther Flanagan and Lula Wall. Grandmother Lula Flanagan I remember well, but Grandfather Luther was considered an abusive man and even my father was not allowed more than a couple of visits.

We have a wonderful picture of my grandmother and I assure you Ernest Flanagan (no middle name per Ernest) was Luther and Lula's son.

Thanks for the message some time ago and if you have more info, I would love to exchange.
