I have been told that one of my gr.uncles, last name Mayes, is buried at or near Duncan, AZ. He supposedly was killed by the indians. He was from Texas originally. Can anyone verify this for me? I have located most of the graves of this family but this one is lost to me. Many thanks to all who try to assist on these projects. Lois Wimberley Chandler

Do you live near Duncan?
Anyway I live about 2 miles from the Duncan, Greenlee Co, AZ cemetery, I will go look there and see if I find him.
Do you have any other info?
Birth/death date etc.
You can email me direct crichins@vtc.net

Cindy, I have very little further information. If this is John Richard Mayes, he was born early 1860. He is listed with his parents, Lorenzo and Joanna on the 1860 Hays County, TX. census. I feel this is the one, due to the fact he was about 2 years older than his sister, Texanna, who was my G-grandmother. I've been told she was very close to him during their childhood.
I live in Texas, only a few hours drive from where the Mayes family lived a good part of their lives. Except for Grandpa Mayes(Lorenzo). He liked to travel and moved so much I've only found him in 2 census reports!! Thanks for your response, and I will be looking forward for any word. Lois

I have a copy of The Hays County Historical Commission of 1986. Pages 328-333 documents John Hays, brother Daniel Mayes and son Lorenzo living in Onion Creek Settlement of Hays County beginning in 1851 to 1870. Glad to share it with those who are interested.
