*Please respond to my e-mail address*

I have extensively researched the records of Person and Granville County, NC for the descendants of Capt. Samuel SNEED and his wife Jane DUDLEY. Their children married into the Williams, Gooch, Ragland, Parker, Redd, Mitchell families. Many of these people lived in the Mt. Tirzah area of Person county. I am now looking for people with family stories, photographs, and family history to share. I look forward to hearing from anyone. J. Daniel Mahar, San Francisco, CA

RE: SNEED. While trying to sort out Crocketts of NC, I came across one John H. Crockett who was married 7 Dec 1834 in Caswell Co, NC, to Frances Sneed (b ca 1815/16). They had a daughter Lucy A. about 1838/39, probably in Virginia. In October 1832, William Watkins, orphan, age 12, was bound to John H. Crockett. In 1836 John H. Crockett was one of several who were paid for "freight of tobacco". He apparently died young. Frances can be found in Danville in 1850 through 1880, but not on the 1900 Soundex. As of 1880 she lived near the south bank of the Dan River on Loyal Street, a stretch of several blocks running south from the River. Lucy was found last at home in 1870.

I also stumbled across a fascinating set of circumstances surrounding one Lucy Crockett of Person Co, NC, who was granted a divorce in 1808 by the NC legislature. Her petition (NC Archives, Raleigh) states specifically that her husband William was wasting her inheritance, that he was imprisoned for counterfeiting, that he had traveled through several states committing immoral acts, and had left Lucy to rear a son (not named in the record) of that marriage. She sought a divorce as protection from her husband's creditors. Records suggest that William and even her Lucy's own mother (also named Lucy) were cheating Lucy out of her inheritance and that others were helping her fight to regain it. I have federal records of William Crockett's counterfeiting trial. The case even reached President Thomas Jefferson's attention.

It appears that William Crockett married one of the younger heirs of a prominent Caswell/Person Co, NC, family, the Moores. Lucy was still a ward as late as 1799 which suggests that she was born in the late 1770s, during the Revolution.

I suspect that the John H. Crockett who married Frances Sneed was that son of William and Lucy (Moore)Crockett.

Do you have anything about this? Can Frances Sneed be identified?

All best,
Don Maring

My great, great, great grandfather was John S. Long, and is possibly one of the sons of Drury Long. He was apparently born about 1821-22, married to Elizabeth, and had children - Rebecca (my great great grandmother), Moses, William, Melissa and William. Do you possibly have information on any of these people?

Hello Kathy, unfortunately, what I discovered after recording facts from on line, was that most of what everyone post on line is far from accurate. Drury and Oney were married in 1820 but the first thing known about there children is William Ambrose b 1826. I don't have any info on John but I do find a Moses b 1843 married to an Ellen in 1870. There children are Sallie B age 8, Lottie age 5, Addie age 2 Sinnie age 9/12. Moses is just the right age if he is indeed the son of John S born 1821. I wish you luck in your search. I have discovered my great great grandmother is Mary Long b 1830. She had 2 children out of wedlock. There is a possibility that she is the daughter of Drury and Oney. There is a posting of a Girl Long b 1829 for them. But nothing is known about her.

Thanks for your reply. In researching marriage records for Person Co., there is information to indicate that Drury Long was married three times, and had 10 children. He was a witness for the marriage of John Long and Elizabeth Gregory in 1824, which made me wonder if perhaps he named a son for this John Long. The John S. Long that was my great great great grandfather would have been born around 1821, a year after Drury and Oney were married, and there is a John Long named among Drury's children - I just haven't been able to find information that confirms that my ggg grandfather and Drury's son are one and the same. Interesting too, that like your gg grandmother Mary Long, my gg grandmother, Rebecca Long, had her two children out of wedlock. There seem to be a lot of similarities for it all to be coincidence.

I am a MITCHELL (my great grandfather Robert S. Mitchell) decendant. He was from Person County and moved to Vandersburgh, KY marrying Unity S. Trice. Can not locate any previous info on his parents, etc. I believe the SPRINGFIELDs and Mitchells had a connection and the name SNEED popped up in the past.

Robert's parents are listed in the family Bible as CHARLES MITCHELL & SALLIE HAMLIN. Can't find anything specific on them. Would like assistance if you have info. tudla@aol.com

Would like to know who the Williams' were who married into your family. Do you find any Crockett/Williams or Crockett/Gooch marriages.

I am researching the Williams of KY, NC & VA. We have a member in our DNA Project who is researching Williams/Croketts. You might like to review our site at:

www.williams.genealogy.fm/

I am in group #2 under "Doyle". The Crockett/Williams marriage is under Group #2 "Vic". Just click on the name to see the short Pedigree of each family. This is under the Sherrod Williams of Franklin Co., TN but we are from all lines of Williams in all states. Clydene
