Looking for info about Jeremiah Cowan. Died in 1821 in Sturgis, Union Co., Kentucky. Was married in South Carolina in the Old 96th District to Elizabeth Hayes. Need to know where he came from. It is assumed that he came from Scotland. Have not been able to find any info about his family--brothers, sisters, parents. Have info about him and his desc. in Ky.

I am related to your husband by William Cowan's son, Jacob Bailey. Here is what I know about Jeremiah. He was married on January 24, 1788 in the Old 96th District of South Carolina and died in 1822 in Union County, Kentucky. Elizabeth Hayes was born in 1775 and died March 8, 1856 in Union County, Kentucky. They had the following children: William, b. 1793, James W., b. 1803, Elizabeth b, 1807, Eleanor, b. 1809, and Nicy, b. 1815. I have found references to a James and John Cowan for 1779 Colony in the Old 96th District. I also have more info about each of these children as well as info about William Cowan and his wife, Mary Elizabeth Dickerson. The parents of your Louisa Minerva Cowan.
Jeremiah was my g-g-g-g-grandfather, after which followed William, his son, Bailey, and his daugher Mary Minerva, my great-grandmother. Marilyn

Thank you for your reply. I do not have documentation yet on any of the COWAN data i have, as i just made note of what was on ancestry.com for me to follow up on. I thought i had gotten your name from the COWAN data there. If so, it shows: Jeremiah d.1821, Elizabeth d.1822 and William b.1798. Just so you know. I have nothing yet on Elizabeth DICKERSON and was planning to find what i can there next. Since you and my husband share the same ggg grandfather William COWAN, you are 4th cousins accordingly. I love this genealogy. Happy Trails, Joan & Harold

Joan, I have found Elizabeth Dickerson's line. She was the daughter of Weir Dickerson & Mary Etherley who md in Sumner Co. TN, 24 Aug. 1803. Weir was the son of Nathan Dickerson & Susan Weir, & is named in the will of his grandfather, Thomas Weir of Pittsylvania Co. VA. There is a power of attorney on file in Pittsylvania Co. in which Weir Dickerson's widow & her children are named : Mary Dickerson, widow of Weir Dickerson, William Cowan & wife Elizabeth late Elizabeth Dickerson, Susannah Dickerson, & Mary Ann Dickerson. (Pittsylvania deed bk 43, p. 258; 10 Dec. 1839). Weir Dickerson was in Robertson Co. TN in 1830 census, but I couldn't find a marriage for Elizabeth to William Cowan there.

I too have seen the early census information in the Old 96th of a James and John Cowan. I am seeking to document a daughter named Mary Cowan. In my family, Cowan married Darwin and then Darwin married Petty in the Old 96th Dist.
Mary Cowan (b. 9-14-1746 (or 6-1-1746 Louisa VA) d. 1818 York Co SC) may be the daughter of a George Cowan. Mary Cowan married James Darwin prior to 1767 (see York Co SC census). The Darwins were in the Old 96th Dist area at the time of this marriage, so I assume that the Cowan family was in the Old 96th Dist also.
The Cowan name was a common son's name in the Darwin and Petty families. I would appreciate any information on this Cowan family.
Their daughter Jane (Darwin) Petty and husband Thomas Petty were on the York Co SC census in 1800. Petty family is in neighboring Union CO SC, after migrating from Chatham Co NC ca 1780. I'm heard of a Cowan cemetery in the area, but do not have an inventory: Cowan Family Cemetery: York SC E of Hwy.40, West of Bullocks Creek in SW York Co
Children of Mary (Cowan) and James Darwin: i. JANE DARWIN b. 1767 York Co SC ii. WILLIAM WASHINGTON DARWIN b. 1769 York Co SC d. 1853 Madison Co AL iii. GEORGE COWAN DARWIN b. 10-18–1771 d. 7-30-1853 iv. ANNE DARWIN b. ca 1776 d. 1863 v. SARAH DARWIN b. 4-27-1780 d. bef 1820 vi. JOHN M. DARWIN b. 1781 d. 1856 vii. NANCY DARWIN b. ca 1784 viii. JAMES W. DARWIN b. ca 1787 ix. JERUSHA DARWIN b. ca 1796 d. 1873 TN ix. "Miss" DARWIN b. ca 1798

Re: Cowan - Old 96th DIst SC
There was a George Cowan on a 1790 Jury List in Union County, SC. Would this be the same George you are referring to in York?

Other than finding out about Weir Dickinson a few years past, this original query is still true. It would be great to find out more about Jeremiah Cowan. I feel he came from Scotland and settled in the Old 96th area before he moved on to Kentucky. One day this brick wall will fall!!! I am glad to see interest in the Cowan family. Marilyn
