I am looking for the death certificate or any evidence of the death of Jehu Hale born in Franklin County, VA between 1844 and 1845. He was the son of Nancy Leffew daughter of Thomas whose father Elias belonged to free people of color from Rockingham, North Carolina. Her grandmother on her mother's side was supposed to be named Quigley.

I am curious if this Jehu is my father's great grandfather Jake. Jehu was a common name for "Jake" and Jacob at that time. My Jake was supposedly mainly Indian ("Blackfoot" or and Shawnee) but also a descendant of the white Hale family. (Sometimes they call him a Cherokee.) He looked "like Cochese" according to his granddaughter, my aunt Imogene and was a medicine person as were his descendants. He wore his hair long and stayed in the woods a lot usually with little clothes on eating snakes and making belts from them. They call him "wild".

His family is said to have lived in a place reserved for "Indians" either in Virginia or later on in Bluefield, West Virginia for a while.

Connected surnames are Reynolds, Calaway, Turner.

Jacob worked in some kind of distillery or mill for a while. His daughter Sarah said they were from the "Blackfoot" who had come up originally from South Carolina.

I am also looking for a Jacob Hale, who had a daughter, Maggie. I'm don't know if this could be the same one or not. He did move from the Rocky Mount Va area to Bluefield WV area. Then in his late years he was in Vickers VA. If you happen to know if your Jehu had a daughter named Maggie, please let me know. Thank you!

There is a Maggie born around 1881 in Franklin County where Rocky Mount is. She is daughter of Jacob Hale and E. Hale who married a Walter Thompson. That is not my Jacob's family though.

I found that on familysearch.org if you put in Margaret Hale with an advanced search with Jacob Hale as father.

On the Guion Miller Application my family made a similar claim about a reservation or tribe near Bluefield WV. Just wondering if this might be the same Hale family.

Hi there, Somerset. I took a look at your tree and see we many of the same Hale's up. I have since found that there were two or three Hale families in Franklin County and that some of the Hales in each of these families claimed partial Native ancestry before they moved to West Virginia in the late 1800s.

I have also found out that I am likely descended more from the John Hale of Bent mountain 1706 or a William Hale who had been descended from the Hales of New England intermarried with the Quarles family and had a lot of Native American descendants who moved westward early.

Finally, there was the family in Franklin County that was in part descended from the Lephews/Leffew, Martins and Quigleys some of whom were Indian and/or Melungeon in ancestry. The problem has been that many people have these families which were not originally related heavily intertwined on their trees because some of them were even intermarried with the same families in the same counties.

My Hales also claimed to have had a connection with Nathan Hale, the Revolutionary's family in Connecticut. I have heard from other descendants of Native American Hale's that same story.

You can contact me direct if you'd like. I'd like to hear about which of your Hale's claimed Native American ancestry that were from Bluefield.

My 4th great grandmother was born in a wigwam at this so called reservation near Bluefield WV in 1803. My ancesters claim to have gone there and visited her father. They claim to be Cherokee but that is not proven. I have taken DNA tests and I do carry native american DNA.
