Notes for MAGGIE DAVIS:
Divorce from W. O. Sills, her first husband, Maggie would remarry a fellow named Parnell and have a daughter by him named Ruth.

Notes for WILLIAM OSCAR SILLS:
W. O. Sills operated a general merchandise business in the Forks of the Creek area of Jackson Co, FL. Over the years, he actually had two stores, according to his grand nephew, Ballard Bishop. Ballard thinks the first store was located about 1 to 2 miles north of the intersection of Sellers Road and Highway 2, possibly at the junction of Sellers and Annie Roads. A post office was also located at this first store, operating from 1896 until 1908, when postal service for the area was transferred to Crosby, AL. W.O. served as postmaster during this time. The locale became known as Sills, FL, and can still be found on some maps today, though the location shown is generally that of the second store at Sellers Road and Hwy 2.
About 1916, the road which would become Highway 2 was graded, being called the "hog and hominy" road, a reference to the livestock and agriculture of the area according to Ballard Bishop. At this time, W.O. relocated his business to the east side of the intersection of Sellers Road and the newly graded road. The concrete foundations of his second store are still visible at the intersection.
W.O. also served as a justice of the peace in that area.
His first marriage to Maggie Davis ended in divorce, a bitter end it seems. His second wife, Alice Andrews, died shortly after childbirth and their son died within a short time of her. W.O.'s marriage to Tulya Hart, his cousin, the daughter of Meredith Hart, ended as unhappily as W.O.'s first two marriages. According to what Ballard has been told, W.O. wanted to divorce Tulya but didn't want to make any property settlement on her. He somehow arranged to have Tulya caught with another man and divorced her after that.
W.O. bought a Buick about 1918, the first new car in the area. His brother, Frank, had owned the area's first car, a used Model T.
Buried: AL, Houston Co, Ramah Primitive Baptist Church

PITTMAN Jun-13-1909 in FL, Jackson Co, daughter of JOSIAH PITTMAN and SUSANNA COHRON. She was born May-07-1890 in FL, Jackson Co, and died Jan-27-1950 in FL, Hillsborough Co. He married (2) MARY LULA WHITMORE Aft. 1918. She died Nov-13-1952.

Notes for HUGH SILLS:
Hugh moved from Jackson County to Bay County, Florida after the death of his father in 1934. He left, by what his daughter remembers, because he didn't want to die of "the fever" that had killed his father, W.O., and so many others in that area along the Alabama border. There's still a lot of swamp and wetlands in that region, and without the pesticides of later times, mosquitoes and other carriers of disease must have wreaked havoc among the earlier residents. However, this story might well be inaccurate. I've been unable to obtain a death certificate, but according to Ballard Bishop, W.O. may have died of cancer, not "fever."
Hugh served in the army during World War I. He was always quite proud of that fact. His grave, beside that of his second wife, Lula, at Greenwood Cemetery in Panama City, is marked with a veteran's stone recording his service.
In what's now a part of Panama City, Hugh established a general merchandise business much like that once operated by his father in Jackson County. He prospered in his new home and came to enjoy some wealth and minor social prominence. He wasn't of the social and economic ilk of the great entrepreneurs who opened Florida to settlement and boomtimes in the last half of the 19th and the first half of this century. Yet, I think he came to recognize and appreciate his success.
Unfortunately, that success did not reach as completely into his personal life. His first marriage, to Mittie Pittman, ended in divorce and his separation from his children for too much of his life. His second wife, Lula, was plagued by the pain of arthritis for much of her life. Hugh would find some comfort in his faith. My mother remembers him by Lula's hospital bed, his Bible opened as he prayed for her and urged her to find strength in her own belief.
Hugh's own health began to fade over time. In his last years, he suffered from what was likely Alzheimer's. My grandmother and parents remember some colorful, sometimes frightening, stories of those times. Hugh found a friend in "Doc" Daffin, a fellow Mason and sheriff of Bay County. Finally, however, Hugh had to be hospitalized, first at Chattahoochee, and later at a veteran's hospital in Biloxi, Mississippi. When he died, he was brought home to Panama City for burial.
The following is based on a conversation with Ballard Bishop, Hugh's first cousin once removed:
About 1914, Sylvester Hart (son of Meredith Hart, grandson of Levi Hart) was murdered by his own cousin, James Levi Hart (son of James White Hart and also a grandson of Levi Hart), and another young man, Dan Smith. The killing was the result of some sort of argument about a load of shingles. Just before the killing, Hugh had been riding in a wagon with the other three. After the trial, in which Dan Smith turned state's evidence, and the two young men were sentenced to some time in Raiford, Hugh said that he had known the two intended something against Sylvester and that he had left them to avoid being made an accomplice.

Children of HUGH SILLS and MITTIE PITTMAN are:
i. GERALD6 SILLS, b. May-09-1909; d. Dec-1983, FL, Gadsden Co, Chattahoochee.

Notes for GERALD SILLS:
While a baby, Gerald fell from a bed and suffered brain damage which probably caused the epilepsy from which he suffered all of his life. He remained at home while his mother, Mittie, was alive. By what my grandmother told me, Mittie was the only one able to handle a sometimes willful young man. After her death, he spent many years in hospitals, nursing homes, and finally Chattahoochee State Hospital.
At first glance, it would seem Gerald had an unhappy life, and obviously, fate might have been kinder to him. However, my grandmother remembered many good times with Gerald, and though he was never able to take to "book-learnin," he outworked many other men in the fields of South Florida and at other jobs. He wasn't unaware of the good things in his life and once hitchhiked from Florida to Nashville to see his idol, Bill Monroe, the founder of bluegrass music as an artistic and commercial success. According to my grandmother, Gerald actually met Mr. Monroe, who provided him with busfare home.
Gerald died at Chattahoochee. He's buried with his mother in a little church cemetery in Dover, Florida.
Buried: FL, Hillsborough Co, First Baptist Church of Dover.

I am trying to research my father's family. His grandfather who helped raise him was David J. (Dave) Davis of Jefferson County, Alabama. I believe Dave came from Georgia. He was born either in 1859 or 1860 and died in 1944. On his death certificate it list his father as Eli Davis of Cedartown, GA. Do you have any information on this? Have been searching, but not really locating any information.

Yes, I am responding to my own message. Thanks to those who emailed me. I haven't been able to answer everyone yet. I am going to provide some basic info on the Hattie Davis/Fate Richter branch. I will provide more extensive info on this board after I finish moving and get back online in about three or four weeks. There is almost nothing available online on these individuals and their descendantsand in the Fate Richter case nothing at all on his ancestry. If anyone has anything to add, it would be greatly appreciated.

Hattie Davis is the daughter of Ratliff Ferdinand Davis (Ferd) and Lou Ella Bruner. Info on these folks can be found in an earlier message from Ron Hall.

Hattie is my great grandmother. She married Amandus Lafayette (one word or two, capital or lower case f, spelling uncertain) Richter (Fate). Only the name Fate Richter appears on his tombstone. I have a difficult to read copy of a letter Fate's dad wrote to him for the occasion of his twentyfirst birthday.

Hattie and Fate had 14 children. About eleven of them lived to adulthood. My grandfather was the oldest. He was Malcolm Lee Richter. He has three living siblings.

Malcolm married Lola Lea Womble, my grandmother. They had seven children. They were married for twenty years, divorced and each married several more spouses between them. My grandmother is the greatest woman who ever lived. She never spoke a harsh word to me. She treated me like gold.

The youngest child of Malcolm and Lola Richter is my father, Dorsey Devon Richter. He married Reba Lillian Koelling and had three children. I am the eldest. Dorsey and Reba divorced and each remarried. Reba divorced again. Dorsey married Margaret Elaine Scott.

Going back to Fate Richter--- His parents were John F.D. Richter (I've been told the F. stood for Ferdinand) and Maggie Taylor. John's father was Ed (Edward, Edmond, Edgar...I don't know...no one else seems to know either) . John, and his father Ed and John's stepmother all came over from Germany together.

I'll post dates and places and siblings and anything else I can find upon request. Wait about a month to ask or to expect a response. Thanks. My email is mollydorseyrich@yahoo.com.

I saw your post on the message board at Ancestry.com today and just had to write. I am a descendant of Edward's brother John Joseph Richter, who came to America like Edward did. The rest of the family remained in Bavaria, Germany. If you want to learn more of this line, all the way back to before 1639, try to get your hands on a book called
"Victorious Rebel, Edward F. Richter" by Peyton Richter. It was published by Ponder, Inc. Thomasville, GA in 1986. It tells the story of Edward's life in Germany and his emigration to America. It outlines his family, names the children, and then tells of his death at the end. It's a moving story filled with genealogical details. It is out of print now but you might be able to find it in your local Genealogy Library.

Don't see too many Georgia Richter descendants . . . I am descended from Fate Richter's grandfather, Edward. You'll see I have your line recorded quite a few generations back, thanks to the work of my 2nd cousin who went to Germany and did quite a bit or research.

I myself am from Cairo, Georgia, near where your Fate lived.

Fate is shown in my database by his born name, Amandus.

Take a look at my Richter info here, and see if it gives you any new leads.

Thanks so much for your response. I would love to find the book. I'll go to the library soon--we have a large genealogy section. I have never heard from anyone from your branch. I'm always happy to hear from new relatives esp. new branches. I'm sorry it took me so long to respond. Now I know why Ed's first son was named John. I would appreciate any info you could send. I, of course, don't expect a whole book's worth. I have nothing on your branch and am interested. Thanks
