Scandinavian And/Or German Gypsy

Hello everyone, my grandfather has the surname Carl - which is a Scandinavian name... I don't know much about him - he used to joke a lot and was good at "hustling"... so therefore we could never tell the difference between a truth and a lie. He claimed he was German, but we're not sure - because he would "speak" German... that is, until my uncle learned German and realized that he wasn't speaking anything - Or at least not German.
How can I figure out if he was a Romani?
Thank you :]
