Hopper and Smiths of Kent

Classification: Query
Surnames: Smith Hopper
I descend from Samuel Smith b. abt 1809 in Quebec or possibly Ontario, or US d. 4 Feb. 1901 Chatham Tp. Kent, ON. Samuel married Nancy Hopper b. bet. 2 Sep 1813 and 1815. Quebec or Ontario d. sometime aft. 1911. Nancy Hopper was the dau. of an unknown Hopper and his wife Elizabeth b. bet. 1773-1776. Elizabeth lived (as per census) with her handicapped son Abraham in Chatham Tp. until she died 22 Mar. 1873 (Chatham Tp.- her son Thomas Hopper was the informant). Nancy's known siblings seem to be the following: 1)Abraham (b. abt 1809 in Quebec or Ontario - noted as handicapped in all census); 2) Nancy (above wife of Samuel Smith); 3)Caroline b. 31 Mar. 1815 (possibly Toronto as per record) d. 25 May 1910 Chatham Tp. Kent, ON m. (28 Sep. 1840) William J. Babbitt b. abt 1812 US d. bef 1881; 4)Thomas b. abt 1817 in Dundas, ON per record d. aft. 1881 Kent, ON m. (17 Sep. 1844) Maria Williams b. abt 1827 Kent, ON; 5)Eve b. bet. 27 Jul 1819-Dec 1821 d. 6 Jun 1906 m. (17 Sep. 1844) Samuel Williams b. abt 1823 d. 16 Mar. 1878 Marine City, St. Clair, MI. This family has been confused with the Abraham Hopper/Elizabeth Crowder family. The Hoppers who settled in Chatham Tp. Kent Co. ON while possibly related to Abraham Hopper and Elizabeth Crowder of Dundas, are not one and the same. The two families were living at the same time in the respective counties, making them 2 separate and distinct families. Any help in furthering the tree - land records (obviously Elizabeth the matriarch was married at one time and lived on land of her own in Kent, so if someone has found information on her or her husband I would love to hear from you), will?, Samuel Smith's ancestry? would be greatly, greatly, appreciated. There was a flurry of Hopper research 5 years ago, now no one seems to be on - so this is my 3rd attempt to connect with researchers to push this family back further.

You seem to be quite Frustrated but please let me ask why you came to me for help? I do not help people now that my health is getting worse and I have so big a road to travel in my own trees before my sight goes entirely and the tremours in my legs and arms get much worse than they already are. If ancestry is still sending out suggestions to people to contact me for help they are almost as unconsionable as I already think they are. Now that I have vented on you please accept my apology. I did look into both the Hoppers and Smith trees and they are on my Russell nee Sawyers nee Daines family tree which I will send you an invitation to visit it when I have your email address. If it is already listed in your query look for the invite anytime soon. As far as Samuel Smith goes I only found his b. date as 1814-1886 d, date, He is not listed as m. to Nancy Hopper but m. to Myra Maria L. Taylor 1st wife and Cecelia Prosser 2nd wife. Many children. Samuel Smith goes to Philip Smith 1761-1830 then on to Thomas Wm. Smith1755-183. I won't go further as you can do this yourself if you have ancestry.ca or go look at my family tree. Still I wonder what made you choose to contact me. sincerely and best wishes on the road ahead. Marlene G.Russell

Marlene,

I did NOT contact you. I have sorted the Hopper family out, but believe the standard lines are wrong - they do not fit the data from the records. The Kent family is related to but different from the Dundas families. I laid out the information in previous posts, as well as the one above. As to Samuel Smith. My Samuel Smith was most definitely married to Nancy Hopper. In fact the various records, and a tombstone in the Smith Hopper Cemetery in Chatham Tp. Kent ON confirms it.
